What is MCI FMGE Exam?

The Medical Council of India (MCI) Foreign Medical Graduate Examination or more commonly referred to as FMGE is a medical licensing examination. It is a screening test which came into being through Screening Test Regulations, 2002. Conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE), FMGE is a mandatory examination required to be undertaken by all Indian citizens or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders who have pursued their medical education abroad and plan to practice in India by obtaining a provisional or permanent registration with Medical Council of India (MCI) or any State Medical Council. However, candidates who have undertaken their undergraduate medical qualification from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and New Zealand are not required to appear for their FMGE test to practice in India provided they are eligible to enroll as a medical practitioner in the respective country.

In order to appear for FMGE, candidates should be holding the provisional pass certificate/degree certificate of primary medical qualification and the certificate of eligibility (if required). Those who qualify in the exam obtain a screening test pass certificate which the NBEMS awards once the biometric/Face ID and relevant documents verification has been completed.

NBE not only conducts the test but also publishes the result and forwards it to the Medical Council of India & all State Medical Councils.

MCI FMGE Exam Pattern

Conducted by NBE – the FMGE examination is an online examination that requires candidates to solve 300 multiple choice questions divided into two sections, i.e. Part A and Part B. Candidates would be given 150 minutes to solve each section. Those appearing for the exam will be given a break between the two marks. All the questions in the FMGE question paper will carry equal weightage. One mark would be awarded for every correct answer and no negative marking for an incorrect entry. According to the exam pattern of FMGE, a candidate needs to score at least 50% marks in the examination to qualify. The paper is set in English language only.

MCI FMGE Passing Marks

In order to pass the exam, candidates will have to score a minimum of 150 marks out of 300 in the examination. Students will be able to check their results on the NBEMS website. Provision for re-totalling/reevaluation does not exist.

Hello Reena. There is a certain amount of ambiguity because with National Medical Commission (NMC) bringing in new rules for 'exit' exams. The NMC also requires candidates studying MBBS abroad to complete a one-year internship at the location of study before applying for the FMGE exam.

Hello Saloni. Since you have transferred to Armenia and your final degree would be from Armenia. Hence, the rules of Armenia apply. So if you have successfully completed your MBBS from Armeni then you can apply for the FMGE exam.
