Established in the year 1973, Murdoch University is a public research-intensive institution of higher education located in Perth. It started operating in 1975 with 510 students enrolled in various undergraduate programs. The institute is affiliated to Innovative Research Universities (IRU), Open Universities Australia (OUA) and Universities Australia (UA). With its main campus situated in Perth, it also operates satellite campuses in Dubai and Singapore. The university conducts teaching sessions in three separate campuses in Australia, i.e., the South Street Campus, Peel Campus and the Rockingham Campus. Located in a suburb, the South Street Campus forms the main campus of the university.
This 560-acre campus features the academic buildings of humanities, social sciences, education, economics and commerce, a semi-enclosed peace pavilion named Joglo Rahayu, Bush Court, Chancellery Building and Bower Court. Its southern portion consists of cattle stockyards, farms and renewable electricity centres. It also houses the Nexus Theatre, which serves as a venue for events, workshops and performances. The university offers over 250 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs in various disciplines of business, law, creative arts, communication, engineering, health, science, cultural and social studies, education and technology. Set up in 1991, the Asia Research Centre offers distinctive research in politics, governance, political economy, social reform and policy-making. It has academic collaborations with over 50 universities, which facilitate student exchange programs for enhanced learning.

At present, the university has around 23,000 students from more than 90 countries of the world. It has 1,500 staff members on the roll, who are highly-learned and experienced in respective subjects. Murdoch University possesses a comprehensive alumni base of over 70,000 graduates. The list includes the names of leaders, innovators and award-winners in their respective fields. Tracey Nicole Cross, a visually-impaired swimmer who won 10 medals in three Paralympic Games, is among the most distinguished alumni of the university. Other noble alumni of the university are Jeremy Callaghan (Australian Actor), Basil Zempilas (TV and Radio presenter), Barbara Wienecke (Antarctic researcher), Chandrika Ravi (Australian actress and model), Edmund Yeo (Malaysian filmmaker), Kim Scott (Australian novelist), John Turner (Australian politician), Toby Miller (media scholar), Vivienne Elanta (environmental activist), James Edelman ( Australia high court justice), Visam Ali (Maldivian politician), Reg Bolton (clown, educator, actor and writer) and Frederic Jevons (educator and biochemist)
