Southern Cross University offers degrees in collaboration with Papua New Guinea and China. In the 1970s, Southern Cross University was only a Teachers College with 151 students. It was known as Lismore Teachers College then. In 1973, it was renamed to Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education. It evolved around the 1990s and finally became a university with an identity of its own around 1994. The first Vice-Chancellor of Southern Cross University was Professor Barry Conyngham. Around 95 international students had enrolled in 1995.

In 2008, eight peak organizations of Northern Rivers had come together and formed the SNR (Sustain Northern Rivers) collaboration. To date, three major programs have been formulated by them, including Sustain Food, Sustain Transport, and Sustain Energy. Southern Cross University got the top rating for 'well above world standard' in six research areas. There are quite a few academic and research programs at the university. All the undergraduate and postgraduate programs are organized into 6 schools, 2 colleges, and 2 research centers. The university maintains School of Health and Human Sciences, School of Education, School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Environment, Science and Engineering, School of Business and Tourism, School of Law and Justice, SCU College, Centre for Peace and Social Justice, National Marine Science Centre, and Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples.

Notable alumni include Steven Layt - experienced president/ CEO, Lachlan Humphries - sports filmmaker and creative director at Clean Line Productions, and Tanietta de Launey - Native Title Cultural Heritage Liaison Officer.
