Formerly known as the University of Western Sydney, Western Sydney University is a highly-ranked public institution of higher education in Greater Western Sydney, Australia. The university was the result of a merger between two former institutions that created a network of the federated University. The institution began operating from 1st January 1989 under the terms of the State Legislature. In the same year, Macarthur Institute of Higher Education was incorporated to the university. It took up its current name in 2015.
