Once you receive the offer letter from a college in Canada. It is only the first step that you cleared there are several steps that still need to be cleared. Now you have to clear the visa application process. Those who wish to Canada for pursuing academic, professional or vocational training at a university, college or any other educational institution in Canada need a study permit before entering Canada. The study permit is issued to students when they arrive in Canada. However, to get there, a student must first apply for a Temporary Resident Visa which is provided by the Canadian High Commission and facilitated by the Visa Application Centers. In this article, we will inform you about the documents needed to start your student visa application for Canada. Apart from this, candidates should also know the reasons why their Canada Visa gets rejected?

Application for a Study Permit - Generic Checklist

  • The given checklist should be used in conjunction with the IMM 5483 Document Checklist for applying for a Study Permit
  • Any document other than in English or French language should be accompanied by a certified translation.
  • Submission of faults statements or documents will result in the refusal of your application.
  • Failure to submit the required documentation can result in refusal or delay in processing the visa.
  • Candidates may need to attend the visa interview.
  • Candidates going for a study program exceeding 6 months needs to undergo a medical exam.
  • Make sure to include the bar code page while submitting your complete and signed application form.

It is recommended that you submit your visa application at least three months ahead of your proposed travel date. Visa applications that are received after 01st April for May entry, after 01st August for September entry and after 01st December for January entry will not normally be processed in time for the start of classes and may be refused.

List of documents you need before submitting your Canada student visa application

Passport

Original and valid passport along with a photocopy of the photo page. If you have expired passports, then include them as well. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your proposed study period, as the validity of the study permit cannot exceed the validity of your passport.

Photographs

Two photographs as per the specifications demanded by the visa authority. Make sure to give your latest photograph with your name printed on its back.

Letter of Acceptance

Letter of Acceptance or Offer Letter from the educational institution in Canada that states:

  • Start date (or multiple start dates, if applicable) and latest possible date of admission
  • Course title
  • Duration of study
  • Level of study
  • Unconditional admission

English Language Proficiency Test Scores

Tests taken in the last 24 months to prove your ability in the language in which you are going to study. Usually, universities ask to submit the IELTS exam score, TOEFL exam score or PTE exam score. This can vary from university to university.

Educational documents

Photocopy of the recently taken course/diploma or degree or other educational certificates along with all the mark sheets (consolidated mark sheet are not acceptable)

Preferred Option for Proof of Funds

Evidence of purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution, in the amount of $10,000 CAD. This is important to cover your living expenses for your first-year stay in Canada and evidence of payment for your tuition fee. You can also submit a copy of the receipt for your tuition fee and a copy of the student loan taken from an authorized Indian bank equivalent to $10 000 CAD.

Income Tax Returns

Last two years Income Tax Returns of you or your parents.

Reference Letter

Reference letter from the individuals who are offering you financial assistance to pursue your program. The letter should state their occupation and relationship with the candidate apart from the number of dependents the sponsors have along with their contact details. In addition to this, a candidate should also submit a letter from the employer of the individuals offering him financial assistance for the program with employer contact details and address of the business location.
