Tips: Be prepared mentally and financially. Have a blue print of your two year plan. You may be get a part time job in first 2-3 months so be prepared on how to manage your finances and accommodation. You may also have to start from zero so be prepared mentally and don't feel bad about it.

Q. Is an approved visa mandatory for international students for studying online?

A. International students can start studying online without an approved visa, provided they’ve submitted the proof of their visa applications being filed with the IRCC. The approved visa will be accepted whenever it is provided. No deadline has been set for the same.

Q. How will my application be evaluated for admission into Algoma University?

A. Applications of all the international students will be evaluated on the basis of the criteria set by specific countries. Basically, the university has set forward the requirement for 5-6 traditional academic courses in the final year of senior secondary, which also includes English. Students need to submit proof of English language proficiency if they hail from a non-English speaking nation.

Q. What is the procedure for applying for admission at Algoma University?

A. Overseas students can directly apply at the university’s application portal or OUAC 105 portal. In case of any doubt or problem, they can mail to international@algomau.ca. They will then have to pay a non-refundable $125.00 CDN fee for the application at the portal itself.

Q. Is it necessary to submit transcripts while applying for admission at Algoma University?

A. Yes, students will have to submit all the transcripts such as post-secondary school transcripts, secondary school transcripts, secondary school diplomas and other diplomas and degrees. All these can be uploaded to the university application portal.

Q. Can I apply for admission at Algoma University if I have a gap in my studies?

A. Yes, you can. If there’s a 2-years out-of-school gap, students will be required to submit documents that should explain their latest professional history. You can submit your employment letters, resume, extra undeclared academic history, and a self-written letter of explanation as proof.

Q. What is meant by an official transcript?

A. These are directly sent by the issuing institution or education authority through the sending institution’s security features such as secure digital encryption, secure paper and institutional seal. These transcripts should not have been handled by the student.

Q. Can I work while studying at Algoma University?

A. Various programs are offered by the university which allow students to work full-time during the summer. They can also work part-time throughout their academic year while studying. Eligible Algoma students can opt for the Work-Study and Summer Employment course which provides jobs on or near the campus.

Q. When will I be considered eligible for a work permit if I’m an international student?

A. If you’re studying in Canada, you’ll have to meet the set criteria that make you eligible for a work permit under the Off-Campus Work Permit (OCWP). These criteria may alter as per the requirements. Requirements for a work permit include a valid study permit and proof that you’ve pursued a full-time course at the university for at least 6 months before you apply. Students should also possess a satisfactory academic record and must be enrolled in an academic course of study (excluding SPELL).

Q. What TOELF and IELTS score is accepted for admission into Algoma University?

A. Paper-based TOEFL: 550, Internet-based TOEFL: 79 Applicants for TOEFL can submit their scores on the ETS portal. IELTS Academic: Minimum 6.0.

Q. Am I allowed to visit Algoma University before taking admission?

A. Absolutely. The university conducts tours from Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM (EST) and in the evenings as well on request. Prospective students are suggested that they visit the university on weekdays when classes are being conducted so as to get a rough idea about the academic atmosphere.

Q. Does the Algoma University organise any events apart from the academic ones for the student?

A. Algoma University takes care that all work and no play make one dull. So as to provide students a break from their hectic study schedules, cultural events are held by Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association (SASA) and Anishinaabe Initiatives Division (AID) for students, staff and faculty members.
