Established in 1967, the Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology is an open institute that is associated with the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, the Canadian Bureau for International Association, and Polytechnics Canada. The institute was developed during the establishment of Ontario's College system in 1967. The founding institutions were opened in 1957, namely the Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology and the Ontario Vocational Centre Ottawa.
The institute is in partnership with some well-known organizations and universities like Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and Shopify. The institute has three campuses throughout Ottawa and the Valley. It began the housing facility in the Canada campus in 2003, with an accommodation capacity of about 1,050 students. The hostel provides all the residential facilities required by the students. It also features parking facilities and pick-up & drop-off services for the local students.
The campus features digital classrooms, cafeterias, medical facilities, and auditoriums. All the events, guest lectures, competitions, quizzes, and fests organized by the institute take place within the campus. Also, many cafes, restaurants, departmental stores, and chemist shops are located nearby the campus. Public conveyance is easily accessible from the institute. Overall, the curriculum includes 122 College Certificates, 41 Ontario College Certificates, 93 Ontario College Diplomas, 33 Ontario College Advanced Diplomas, 52 Ontario College Graduate Certificates, 10 Bachelor’s Degrees, and 6 Collaborative Degrees.
The faculty members of the institute are well-experienced and provide ample practical knowledge to the students. Workshops are also organized and conducted by the college for the students so that they gain exposure and learn about the fieldwork. Students are taken for industrial visits to make them understand the working. They are guided under professionals. In addition, the college features a functional radio broadcast station and an internet station which is completely run by the student body. Moreover, the institute gives students a wide opportunity in the student exchange programs where students learn about a different curriculum along with the expert faculty.
The institute has a remarkable list of alumni that includes Jon Cassar (Director of TV series 24), Collin Douma (Senior Vice President, Global Digital Planning Director at BBDO New York), Janice Dean (Fox News, weather specialist), Norm Macdonald (Comedian), Neil Macdonald (Bureau Chief in CBC Washington), Dan O'Toole (Fox Sports live anchor), James Cybulski (TSN reporter), Sue Holloway (Medal-winning Olympian, Kayak, and the first woman to ever compete at the Winter and Summer Olympics), Veronique Rivest (Second best sommelier in the world (2013), top female finalist ever in the competition), and many more.
