Capilano University is a teaching-focused public university nestled in a natural forested setting on the slopes of the North Shore Mountains. It is named after the Chief Joe Capilano Sa7plek (Sahp-luk) who was the leader of the Squamish people (1895-1910). In 1977, it opened its second campus – kálax-ay Sunshine Coast campus – to serve communities on the Sunshine Coast. CapU recently welcomed students at its Lonsdale Campus, a new extension of the main campus in Fall 2019. It considers research, scholarship, and creative activities essential to building and maintaining a culture of learning and innovation.

Further, it encourages and supports a broad range of research activities, including individual, collective, multi and trans-disciplinary scholarly work, and student research. CapU became Canada's first university to receive accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) in 2012. Classes at CapU have 25 students on average to encourage individualized support and attention to every student. Additionally, the university has international partnerships with educational institutions to offer Study Abroad opportunities to all students through semester-long international exchange programs or short-term field schools across 18 countries.
