Established over 50 years ago, Durham College was named Canada’s Greenest Employer 2020 and Greater Toronto’s Top 2020 Employer. The college’s campus includes a 28,000 square feet triple gym, 10,000 square feet fitness center, two squash courts, an indoor golf course, along with elevated jogging tracks. It offers a variety of study areas that also include its well-stocked library and a state-of-the-art Learning Commons with 200 computers.

The college boasts of a Graduate Employment rate of 86.6%, Employer Satisfaction of 93.9%, Graduate Satisfaction rate of 76.8%, Student Satisfaction rate of 73.6% and Graduation Rate of 67.5%, according to the 2018-19 data. The same year, the college had a graduate population of about 1,06,244 students. In 2016-17, 85% of international graduates were employed or enrolled in further study of six months after graduation.

What all courses are available to international students?


Durham College offers 140 full-time programs to international students via its nine academic schools. Besides the regular programs, the college has recently added a few programs that would commence from 2021. Following are the names of some of the recently added programs:

What are the eligibility requirements?


The eligibility requirements vary depending upon the program. Some programs may have specific requirements, which students must essentially qualify for before applying. The college also suggests that students check the seats available before applying to the program. The eligibility criteria also vary depending on the student’s country of origin. The following are the eligibility criteria for Indian students:

English Language Requirements

International students will have to take the English Language Proficiency Tests in addition to qualifying for the above-mentioned requirements. The basic English Language requirements are as follows; however, some programs may require higher scores:

What all documents are needed for application?

Application & Tuition Fees


Is there any application fees?


Durham College levies an application fee of CAD 100. This fee is non-refundable and payable at the time of filling the application. The fee can be paid via a debit or credit card.

Scholarships & Financial Aid


Are there any scholarships or financial aid available for international students?


Durham College offers a variety of scholarships to international students. However, it is important to note that these scholarships are only open to fresh entrants and students enrolling in full-time programs at the college.

English Proficiency Entrance Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students must submit the application for admission and pay the tuition fee by the deadline, as mentioned in the offer letter
  • Arrive in Canada and remain enrolled in the program past the 10th day of the semester

Exemptions:

  • If a student withdraws from the program in the second semester before the 10th day, the scholarship will stand cancelled, and the amount will be deducted from the refund
  • If a student does not register for the program by the fifth day from the start of the second semester, the scholarship amount will be deducted from the account, and the scholarship will be annulled

Scholarships are awarded towards the second semester fees and will be credited to the account of students before the payment deadline. In case students have paid their full tuition fee at the start of the semester, the college will refund the scholarship amount via cheques. These cheques will beissued at the start of each semester (October, February and June). The English Proficiency Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the following scores:

Academic Excellence Scholarships

As opposed to others, this scholarship is awarded to students who show exceptional academic performance during their program of study. In 2016-17, a total of 14 international students won the Academic Excellence Scholarship. Students are conferred with these scholarships in special ceremonies, in order to applaud their accomplishments.

Bachelor’s Degree Entrance Scholarships

Students will have to contact the International Education Office in order to find out about Bachelor’s Degree Entrance Scholarships.

Note: Students need not directly apply to the college for scholarships. Students who win the said scholarships would be notified by the Durham College faculty via e-mail, after careful assessment of their scores.


Admission Process


When do the admissions start?


Durham College accepts applications for three sessions, namely Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer. The session start dates are mentioned below:

  • Fall Session: September
  • Winter Session: January
  • Spring/Summer Session: May

Application deadlines for the various sessions are as below:

  • Fall Session: February 1 of same year
  • Winter Session: October 1 of previous year
  • Spring/Summer Session: February 1 of same year

The college may continue to accept applications until the seats are full and a waitlist has been established. Durham College accepts applications until the 10th day from the session-start date, depending on seat availability. In some cases, the assessment of applications may take up to five weeks.

How do I start my application? Is there any Pathway option available?


To start your application process, you must go to the official college website and go through the admission details of the program of your choice thoroughly. You can apply for up to five programs at the college. It is important that you go through the requirements of each program to see whether you stand eligible for admission to the said programs.

There are no Pathway programs for international students.


What are the steps to the application process? Is there an interview involved?


Durham College accepts all applications through its official website. Log on to the official college website and click on “Apply Now” to start your application.

Step 1: Fill in your personal details in the “Personal Information” section. Keep your passport handy, as you will be required to upload a scanned copy of your original, valid passport, along with filling in details as mentioned in the passport.

Step 2: Fill in your contact information in this section, where you would like the college to contact you for further communication.

Step 3: You will be presented with two options toproceed with your application. If you have proof of English Proficiency, select “Apply For: Durham College Programs”.

Durham College selects candidates on a first-come, first-serve basis. As the college receives applications from the world over, it is important to apply as soon as you can, to improve your chances of admission.

Currently, Durham College has a total student body of around 13,600 full-time, post-secondary and apprenticeship students, which include about 2,000 international students from over 60 countries.

Part Time Work While Studying


Can I work while studying here?


As an international student to be able to work in Canada, you must be enrolled in a full-time program and have a valid study permit that allows you to work. Along with this, you will also require a SocialInsurance Number (SIN), which will allow you to earn while working.

On-Campus Employment

As an international student, you will be allowed to work on campus. Durham College’s iWorks program helps international students find part-time jobs on-campus. The program runs from September to April annually, and offers work hours of up to 12 hours per week, and 140 hours per semester.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be an international student
  • Possess a valid study permit
  • Be enrolled in a full-time program at college
  • Keep up a minimum GPA of 2.0

Off-Campus Employment 

International students may be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week outside of campus, if they do not have a valid work permit. However, they must qualify all of the following conditions:

  • Have a valid study permit that allows them to work off campus
  • Be a full-time student at Durham College
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program
  • The selected program is at least six months long, and culminates into a degree, diploma or certificate
  • Have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

How many campuses/schools does the college have?


Durham College has two main campuses, namely Oshawa Campus and Whitby Campus.

Oshawa Campus

Besides the Centre for Collaborative Education, Oshawa Campus houses the Durham College Spa, Global Classroom and interprofessional simulation and anatomy laboratories. Additionally, it includes a state-of-the-art Integrated Manufacturing Centre, along with amenities for study sessions. Students can also take a virtual tour of the campus.

Whitby Campus

Whitby Campus is home to students in the fields of Hospitality and Horticulture, Skilled Trades, Animal Care, Food Science and Office Administration. The official college website also allows a virtual tour of this campus.

Is on-campus housing available?


Durham College offers guaranteed on-campus accommodation to first-year students. If you choose to live off-campus, the college offers assistance in finding the right accommodation as per your requirements.

Durham College has two main residential campuses that offer single, double and quadruple occupancy options:

  • The Simcoe Village Residences
  • The South Village Residences

The above-mentioned residences house around 1,300 students in total. In order to confirm your place in the on-campus accommodation, as a first-year student, you must accept the college offer within the said deadlines.
