Counted among Canada’s 15 leading research-intensive universities, the University of Saskatchewan was founded in 1907. It started as a university for studies and research in agriculture and then broadened its scope into the studies of medicine, arts, sciences, law, engineering, theology, etc. The University of Saskatchewan receives a sum of around $175 million from its sponsors for conducting research. This acts as the main feature of the university since it allows students to conduct research and has enough money to provide them with help and assistance in their work. Some of the areas the university conducts research in are - Agriculture, Water, food security, animals, etc.

The university ranks 473rd in the QS World University Rankings, 2023, sharing the position with another institute. It climbed down a few spaces as compared to 2022 where the ranking was 458. In Times World University Rankings 2023, it got placed between 501-600 rank, the same as in 2022. The University of Saskatchewan obtained the 441st rank in the US News and World Report’s Best Global Universities 2023 list (a tie) and 18th in Best Global Universities in Canada. The institution ranks 1st in Canada and 15th globally in the world for water resources research. It has also been recognized among the world’s best universities for sustainability and social impact.

The campus is home to multiple colleges that are affiliated with the university. Students can join recreational clubs and activities such as health centre, gymnasiums, wall climbing, indoor track, hockey rink, swimming pool, squash courts, etc. Students can choose from over 150 undergraduate and graduate courses.

Students studying at the University of Saskatchewan have been Rhodes scholars, Order of Canada recipients, and Olympians. The university has also given one Prime Minister to the world. In 2022, more than 25,900 students and 3,400 self-declared indigenous students made up the university crowd. A total of 3,100 students were from overseas, representing 130 nations. An increase in four major areas of study at the university was witnessed in 2021-2022. Most of the undergraduate students in 2021-2022 were from China, India and Nigeria and graduates were from Iran, China and India.

Various options are made available to students at USask. These include – Voyageur Place (four co-ed, male-only, and female-only residence halls: Athabasca Hall, Saskatchewan Hall, Qu’Appelle Hall and Qu’Appelle Hall Addition), College Quarter (fully-furnished rooms), McEown Park (For students, students with families, upper-year students, and couples), Graduate House (For graduates, students seeking a professional degree or 4th year UG students). Many off-campus options are also available which can be found easily. Overseas students can also opt to stay with a local family through Canada Homestay Network. Students can also reach out to the faculty in residence for academic support or attend free tutoring by Ph.D students weekly.

The University of Saskatchewan offers multiple scholarships, around $13 million are provided for scholarships, bursaries, and awards. Students pursuing graduate studies at the university can obtain funding from various sources. Also, 3 in 4 graduate students have obtained financial assistance through research, teaching, student assistantships, and other awards.

The university has an alumni count of 169 K. Many of these alumni are Nobel laureates, justices in the Supreme Court of Canada, Academy Award winners, Governor General’s Literary Award recipients, provincial and territorial premiers, Order of Canada recipients, etc. Some famous names are Willie Desjardins (Canadian ice-hockey coach and player), Henry Taube (American chemist and Nobel prize recipient in Chemistry), Siera Bearchell (Miss Universe Canada 2016), James Moore (Canadian politician), Lorna Crozier (Canadian poet), William Deverell (Canadian author and criminal lawyer).

One of the best , I would say in the whole of canada

Tips: Students should also know about the weather during winter which can be very cold. I have seen many students change universities because of the weather. Talking solely of the university, it is one of the best ones in the country. There are many internships available starting from the second year.

Good University with a small town vibe

Tips: There may be a fee hike, so please do research on that as there was a huge fee hike this year(2022) of around 10k Canadian dollars. For the program of bachelor of commerce, this university has a good business school. Not much to do in the city for leisure, also, very harsh winters.
