The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) was founded on 1st June 1479 when King Christian I received the approval of Pope Sixtus IV for its establishment. It is counted amongst the oldest universities in Denmark as well as in Northern Europe. The university stopped operating during the civil war that began in 1533. It was reopened in 1537 in the Church of Our Lady. The university's first current building was inaugurated on 13th October 1839. At present, it consists of 3 academic departments, six faculties, and over 200 research centers. The institution holds the membership of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

UCPH features four main campuses across Denmark. Three of these campuses namely, City Campus, South Campus, and North Campus, are situated in Copenhagen while one is located in Frederiksberg. The North Campus houses most of the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences. The City Campus is home to the Central Administration, the Faculty of Social Sciences and a few parts of the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences. The South Campus includes the Faculties of Theology, Law and Humanities and a small part of the Faculty of Science. The Frederiksberg Campus houses some sections of the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences. Besides these four major campuses, the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences also occupy the Taastrup Campus situated in Taastrup, Copenhagen. The Faculty of Science also owns additional facilities in Hørsholm, Helsingør, and Nødebo.

It houses 38,324 students and 9,348 employees including 4,856 researchers. More than 12,900 research publications have been produced by the university. It welcomes over 1,200 exchange students each year and around 900 of its students go abroad to study at its various international partner universities annually. Also, the university maintains strategic partnerships with VELUX, the Capital Region of Denmark, DONG Energy, Novo Nordisk, MAERSK, GlaxoSmithKline, Novozymes, etc.

UCPH has produced lots of brilliant graduates over the years. Tycho Brahe was a well-known alchemist, astronomer, and astrologer. Caspar Bartholin, the Elder was a polymath known for being the first to explain the functioning of the olfactory nerve. Ole Worm was an accomplished physician who contributed significantly to the field of embryology. Thomas Kingo was a celebrated poet whose work marked Danish baroque poetry's high point. Nicolas Steno is known for his work in geology and anatomy and is counted amongst the founders of modern geology and modern stratigraphy. Ole Rømer was a respected astronomer who invented the modern thermometer. The university has many other notable alumni.
