GMAT FAQs

Still, if you have, any confusion regarding GMAT then read the GMAT FAQs and learn more about the exam.

Q. What are the common facts about GMAT?

A. Common facts about the GMAT Exam are:
  • Students are also not allowed to appear for their GMAT exam more than 5 times in a 12-month rolling period.
  • Candidates can attempt the GMAT exam a maximum of 8 times in their lifetime.
  • The unique aspect about GMAT is that it does not have a set exam date. Students have the flexibility to choose from the many available GMAT exam dates to appear for the exam.

Q. What is the difference between GMAT and GRE?

A. The GMAT is the standardized test for getting admission to a business school whereas GRE is required for getting into a graduate school. Now, even certain business schools have also started accepting GRE as well. Similar to GRE, the GMAT exam comprises of a Verbal and Quantitative section. In GMAT, the two sections are combined to give a composite score of 800. You can read more about GRE vs GMAT: Which Exam Should You Take?

Q. What is the difference between GMAT vs CAT?

A. GMAT or otherwise known as the Graduate Management Admission Test and Common Admission Test or commonly referred to as CAT are the two most widely accepted management entrance tests, scores of which are accepted by all the top B-schools, including the IIMs. The basic difference, between the two, is that while CAT is a national-level entrance exam for students looking for admission to Top Business Schools in India, GMAT is held at a global platform and helps students for admission to top B-Schools worldwide. Conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council, GMAT scores are acceptable mainly in the case of NRI/Foreign students who want to study in India. The IIMs accept the GMAT score of domestic candidates for executive management programmes. Candidates can learn in-depth about the difference between GMAT and CAT exams. You can also read  Why B-Schools now prefer GMAT over CAT?

Q. What is a computer adaptive test?

A. GMAT is a computer-adaptive test, it adapts to the performance of the candidate while he is giving the test. The difficulty level of the questions changes based on whether the candidate is answering the questions right or wrong. If the candidate is answering the questions right, the level of the questions will rise, similarly, if the candidate is answering the questions wrong, the candidate will start getting easy questions. Also, as the next question is generated based on the performance in the current question, the candidate cannot visit the previous question. The candidate needs to answer a question whether he is able to solve it or not in order to move ahead in the exam.

Q. What is Percentile vs Marks assessment in GMAT?

A. The GMAT score includes percentile that compares your performance with other test-takers. If you score in the 80 th percentile, then you performed better than 80 percent of the aspirants. Scoring high percentile means you performed better than most of the candidates who appeared for the exam. Similarly, scoring low percentile signifies that you scored lower than most of the candidates.

Q. How can I Reschedule and Retake GMAT Exam?

A. Rescheduling of the GMAT exam can be done through two major modes: online and via phone.
  • 1 to 14 days prior to appointment: US $150
  • 15 to 60 days prior to appointment: US $100
  • More than 60 days prior to appointment: US $50
Please note that the exam cannot be rescheduled on the test date. The only difference in rescheduling the exam is through the phone is that you would need to pay a $10 surcharge along with the rescheduling fee. Retaking the GMAT exam can be done after 16 days from your previous attempt. However, the maximum limit of attempting the exam is 5 times a year. This rolling 12-month period is counted from your first attempt irrespective of the time of year.

Q. What is the Executive Assessment Exam?

A. For Executive MBA, GMAC has introduced a new  Mini GMAT called Executive Assessment exam. This exam is specially designed for EMBA applicants and is of considerably shorter duration. It is meant to test the analytical and logical thinking of the applicant, which is more suited for the Executive MBA course.

Q. Are candidates able to preview their scores?

A. Candidates will not be able to preview their exam scores at the end of the exam, however, they will be able to view their scores before selecting programs that they want to send scores to.

Q. Why candidates can't cancel their GMAT online exam score?

A. Candidates have more control to manage their score with the GMAT online exam. They can view their score and then chose to send their scores to programs. Candidates have the opportunity to send their official score to as many programs as they want to for free once they receive their official score.

Q. How to send my GMAT scores to B-schools?

A. GMAT scores can be sent in two ways to B-schools. While registering for the GMAT exam, candidates have the option of sending the score report to five programs for free. Also, if candidates are not decided yet and need more time to send their scores, they can always request sending an additional score report by paying $35. Many a time, students send their score reports after receiving the score confirmation.

Q. What if I want to score report of the GMAT exam taken over five years ago?

A. Always check with the school before going to request an old score report, a majority of the schools do not accept the scores of the exam taken over 5 years ago. Score reports from exam given within 5 to 10 years ago are available for free, however, they are sent to schools with a caveat that should be interpreted with caution. Also, score before 5 years can only be ordered by reaching out to GMAT Customer Service of your concerned region. View more FAQs
