GRE Test Centres: Conducted by ETS, the Graduate Record Examination or GRE is one of the most popular standardized tests for candidates looking to pursue post-graduate courses in universities abroad. While the GRE General Test evaluates candidates in areas of analyzing abilities, critical thinking, and quantitative reasoning skills along with verbal skills. The GRE Subject test includes testing candidates on subjects including Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. Candidates should note that English Literature and Biology have been removed from the list of GRE subjects tests.  

The GRE General Test is available in both the computer-delivered method and the paper-delivered methods. The GRE paper delivered method is only available in areas with limited access to the Internet. In India, the GRE test is only administrated in a computer-based format. Due to the pandemic, ETS has also launched the GRE at Home for candidates looking to take the GRE test from the safety of their homes. We will be talking more about this in detail a little later. GRE Exam Centre in India Rules & Regulations

Under the GRE Test Centre rules, we are going to be talking about the important factors that candidates need to keep in mind while visiting the GRE Test Centre. The GRE Test Centre rules mentioned have been selected from a long list of Dos and Don't. Candidates are requested to visit the official website for detailed GRE Test Centre rules and regulations.

  • Candidates would be required to bring with them a valid and accepted identification document
  • Candidates would be required to sign a confidentiality and regulations agreement
  • Candidates may have to put their details into a GRE Test Centre log, maintained by the GRE test centre
  • Candidates would be provided with scratch paper for use during the entire duration of the test, which would have to be returned at the end of the GRE test. 
  • There would be a ten-minute optional break provided to the candidate after the third section of the GRE General Test
  • An onscreen calculator would be provided to the candidate during the Quantitative Reasoning section only. No personal calculators would be allowed inside the GRE Testing premises. 
  • Candidates are requested to raise their hands for any queries they may have during the GRE exam
  • At the end of the GRE General Test, candidates would be given the option to report their scores or cancel their scores depending on their performance on the test
  • Candidates would be allowed to view their unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitive Reasoning scores. However, analytical writing scores will not be available because of the scoring method.
  • Candidates can select up to four recipients of their GRE score. Candidates wanting to send their GRE scores to more recipients would have to book the same through their ETS GRE account. 

GRE Centres in India - COVID 19 Protocol

To help protect the health and safety of test-takers and staff, enhanced procedures have been implemented at GRE Exam centres in India.

  • Candidates are required to follow social distancing measures at all GRE centres
  • Candidates are required to bring their own masks - requiring or permitting test takers to wear masks depends on the law of the land.
  • Test takers who want to practice caution are allowed to wear gloves
  • The staff have been advised to wear masks and GRE test centres in India have regular schedules for frequent cleaning of high-touch surfaces and provide disposable wipes so that test-takers can wipe down their testing area.
  • Some GRE centres are requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within a specific timeframe before testing, for entrance to the GRE test centre. Be sure to check with your local test centre for a complete list of health and safety procedures required for admission to the GRE exam centre.

GRE Test Centres in India - Registration

In this section, we are going to be studying the step-by-step registration for the GRE exam across GRE centres in India.

GRE Accommodations for Test Takers

ETS is committed to serving test takers with disabilities and health-related needs by providing services and reasonable accommodations that are appropriate given the purpose of the test. All test takers requesting any accommodations must submit their requests and have their accommodations approved by ETS Disability Services before their test can be scheduled. The request should be submitted as early as possible, especially if the candidate(s) are requesting an alternate test format. Documentation review takes approximately six weeks once the request and complete paperwork have been received. If additional documentation must be submitted, it can be another six weeks from the time the new documentation is received until the review is complete.

Changing GRE Test Center

In this section, we are going to be discussing the process of changing GRE Test Centres. Candidates should keep in mind that Candidates have the liberty of changing their GRE test centres no later than four days before the GRE test date. Candidates would have to pay a GRE Test Centre fee of $50 for changing their GRE Test Centres.  Apart from this, candidates are charged $50 if they want to change a subject in the GRE Subject Test.

GRE Special Handling Requests

Conducted all year long, GRE is one of the most attempted tests by the study abroad aspirants from September to December. Hence, if you aspire to appear for this exam anytime in this duration, it is recommended that you register for the GRE exam by booking your centre in advance. Candidates wanting to avail of additional services would be required to pay an extra fee for the same. Charges for special handling requests for services are mentioned below.

GRE at Home Edition

The GRE at Home is a safe and convenient alternative for candidates looking to appear for the test from the safety of their homes. GRE test centres across India have either temporarily shut down or curtailed services owing to local lockdowns and student safety. The GRE test at home is a safe way for candidates to take the GRE test without having to leave their homes. Currently, the GRE at Home test is offered in all locations except Iran.

The GRE test at home is identical to the GRE exam being conducted at the test centre with the main difference being the location of the test. THE GRE at Home is conducted in the safety of your home and candidates wanting to appear for the GRE test at home would be required to have a computer at home or at a secured location with the system requirements as described on our website.

GRE Test Centre - On exam day

With Covid-19 receding, a lot of the candidates are opting to appear for the exam from the GRE Test Centre. However, candidates should note that masks and maintaining social distance are compulsory in all GRE Test centres in India. candidates would also be required to carry their original and valid Indian passport or Aafhar Card (in case a fresh passport has not been issued) to the GRE centre along with other important documents as part of th verification process before appearing for the GRE exam. 

GRE Test Centres in India - Covid 19 update

In response to the ongoing pandemic COVID-19, ETS - the conducting body of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) has decided to launch the GRE General Test at home (GRE at Home) for locations where the computer-based format of the GRE Test was earlier available for the convenience of students wanting to study abroad. The GRE General Test home edition has been started in response to GRE Test Centres being shut or functioning in minimal capacity due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, candidates need to make sure that they meet the system equipment requirements set by ETS for registration of GRE Home. 

ETS has a series of webinars available on its official website that familiarizes the candidates with this new feature. The home edition of the GRE test would be available to students until test centres resume functioning in full capacity in the various countries. The GRE scores would be communicated to the student within 10-15 days. Candidates should keep in mind that due to the ongoing pandemic there would be no hard copy of the scorecard available to the student.

While choosing your exam test centre, make sure that the season and time of year you pick suits your schedule and mindset. Also, ensure to give yourself enough time to prepare for the exam like you were to give your GMAT. Where can I take the GRE test?

Given the ongoing pandemic, ETS has introduced the GRE at-home edition of the test. Here candidates who want to appear for GRE from the safety of their home and don’t want to visit the test centre can opt for the GRE at home option. Candidates can also opt to take the GRE from an operational test centre near them.

Are GRE test centres open in India?

Given the volatility of the situation it is very difficult to predict whether the GRE test centres close to you are operational or not. Candidates are advised to check test centre availability over the phone or during the time of registration. Candidates can also appear for the test from the safety of their home given they have the system requirements.

When can I take the GRE in 2022?

What is the cost of the GRE Exam?

Indian nationals would be required to pay US $213 to register for the GRE test. Special requests such as late registrations and rescheduling come with an additional cost.

Is 300 in GRE a good score?

There is no such thing as a good GRE score. Every university would have its own GRE Score cut-off and students are required to achieve scores equal or higher than the set grade. Candidates should note that higher GRE scores would automatically increase their chances of securing a seat at the university and also make them a front runner for any scholarships being offered by the university.

Is the GRE test hard?
