How to Register for SAT Exam?

Students can register for SAT exam online and through the mail. In the online process, students need to create a profile on the College Board’s official website. Then select the test date and test center and pay the examination fee online. Whereas, students need 'The Student Registration Guide for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests’ which is available in schools if they want to register by mail. This guide contains the registration form which students need to fill and sent along with the demand draft to the regional office of USIEF (United States India Educational Foundation). Apart from this, students can also register late for the exam after giving a late fee. For registration, students need to check the SAT test dates. There are two ways you can register for the SAT exam in India:

  • Create a student profile here
  • Choose a test date and test centre (Sunday testing or option to choose a test centre closer to home is not offered)
  • You will receive an immediate registration confirmation
  • Pay the exam fee through credit/debit card or online funds transfer.
  • Registration deadlines are typically about three to four weeks before a test date.
  • Late registration deadlines are typically about two to three weeks before the test date, and registering late will incur a late fee

Register by Mail

  • You first need ‘The Student Registration Guide for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests’, which is available at schools.
  • The guide includes a registration form and a return envelope.
  • The form needs to be sent along with a demand draft.
  • The local representative of the SAT in India is the USIEF. The mailed forms will be directed to their regional office.

SAT Test Centres

Administered by the College Board, the SAT test is conducted at around 53 institutes spread across 30 cities of India. With such a huge coverage, there still exists a lag in booking test centers as the test is conducted once a month. When to Take the SAT?

The timing for your SAT is extremely important to reap its benefits in full. The timing for your next SAT exam should be ideally governed by the following factors.
  • a) When Are Your College Application Deadlines?
This should be your primary deciding factor. Candidates are advised to appear for their SAT exams in advance to avoid any last-minute hassle.  Ideally, candidates should apply 8-10 months in advance to experience a smooth college application procedure.
  • b) Are You Applying for SAT Scholarships?
This is another important factor. Candidates who are looking to apply for scholarships that require you to provide SAT Scores should apply in advance as scholarships usually take a longer time to process and include a lot of paperwork. Candidates should note that their SAT Score is valid for a period of 5 years, hence, they can appear for their SAT exam and apply for their SAT Scholarship and use the same score for their college admissions.
  • c) How Many Times Will You Take the SAT?
The validity for your SAT Score is a period of 5 years and there is no limit on the number of times a candidate can appear for his SAT Exam.  Hence, a candidate can start early and appear as many times as he/she likes.
  • d) How Much Study Time Will You Need?
Candidates who take a longer time to study should schedule their exams as per their requirements. The SAT is an expensive exam and candidates are always recommended to prepare entirely and be sure of their performance before booking an exam slot.

Usually students prefer to give the SAT exam while in class on the 11th or 12th. Plan to take the SAT test in such a way that at the time of the application process you have SAT scores with you.

There are no restrictions on taking the SAT test, you can take the test as many times as you want. However, you need to pay the registration fee every time you plan to do it.

Is SAT test difficult?

SAT test includes a mixed bag of questions from very easy to very difficult. Easy questions are usually answered correctly by 90% of the students while hard questions are answered correctly by less than 30 % of students. To know whether SAT is difficult or not one must learn the SAT exam pattern. So, if you like reading and more into words then the Reading section will be smooth for you. Similarly, you need to understand the complete pattern and see whether it is difficult for you or not.

What is a passing SAT score?

There is no pass or fail for the SAT test. The minimum SAT score is 400 whereas the maximum or the perfect score is 1600.

When you should start preparing for the SAT?

It takes at least 6-12 weeks to prepare for the SAT. Also, SAT preparation time can vary from individual to individual. Make sure you have enough time so you have the SAT score with you at the time of the application process.

Are candidates allowed to use a calculator during the SAT exam?

Yes, candidates can use their calculators, for certain sections. Check which type of calculators are allowed by the College Board as it does not permit all types of College Board.
