ESIGELEC was founded by Alexandre Charliat as Ecole Pratique d'Electricité Industrielle (EPEI) in 1901. The school was recognized as a Grandes écoles by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research in 1922. In 1936, it was granted the authority to confer the Diplôme d'Ingénieur by the Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur. The institution was given its current name in 1980. In 1989, it became a part of the Conférence des grandes écoles (CGE). It affiliated to the Groupe des écoles des mines (GEM) and the Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT) in 2011. ESIGELEC is a semi-private engineering institute supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and co-led by Rouen's chamber of commerce. It consists of five academic departments.

Situated in Rouen, France, the ESIGELEC campus is spread across an area of 12,000 sq. m. It features large modern buildings and world-class infrastructure. The campus offers convenient access to the dynamic, historical and vibrant Rouen city centre, which is situated just a 90-minute drive away from Paris. The institute has dedicated an additional area of 5,000 sq. m. to the Campus for Integration of Embedded Systems (CISE). This campus was opened in 2012 for innovation, research and transfer of technologies. The campus offers excellent academic, residential, dining and recreational facilities to the students.

The five academic departments of ESIGELEC offer 2- and 3-year engineering programs, master's degree programs in sciences and technology and several doctoral programs. The institute also offers a few Linguistic and Scientific Adaptation (ALS) programs. It houses over 1650 students, 36% of which are international students.
