Goethe University Frankfurt is a publically-owned university situated in Frankfurt, a large German metropolis. It was established in 1914 as Universität Frankfurt am Main by the powerful and wealthy liberal citizenry of the city. In 1932 its name was changed in honor of the famous writer and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a native of Frankfurt. Today, it is a leading university for research learning and teaching. It is associated with EUA and GATE- Germany consortium.

The university has four campuses located at Westend, Bockenheim, Riedberg, and Niederrad. The main campus is located at Westend. The campus offers programs in history, law, social sciences, psychology, business administration, economics, archaeology, philosophy, theology, pedagogy, philology, and human geography. This campus also has several restaurants and cafes and a beer garden. The Bockenheim campus houses the university library, sports complex, academic buildings, and laboratories of mathematics, art history, computer science, and fine arts. Riedberg campus is a seat to faculty of natural sciences and the Otto Stern Centre which is the lecture hall center and a student-faculty gathering venue. Niederrad campus is home to the university hospital and medical faculty. Each of these campuses is conveniently-located and boasts of its state-of-the-art facilities.

There are specialized libraries in the university namely the Humanities and Education Library, Law and Economics Library, Library Centre for the Humanities, Library Centre for Natural Sciences, Medical Library, and the Art Library. There are 17 dorms with nearly 1850 rooms in Frankfurt that offer on-campus accommodation to the students of GU and two other universities in the city.

Goethe University has 16 faculties that offer over 200 programs which include undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. The university has 45,300 students enrolled for different degree programs including nearly 8,000 international students from some 150 countries. The academic staff of the university has 1,491 members. The university has collaborations with over 700 institutes in nearly 80 countries resulting in student exchanges between them. In addition, the university offers a plethora of educational opportunities, events, and sports activities to the students and faculty members. Sports offered at GU include basketball, badminton, tennis, volleyball, judo, swimming, gymnastics, and karate.

The university has many distinguished alumni who are pioneers, leaders and award winners in their respective fields. The alumni list of the university includes Rolf van Dick( Social Psychologist), Paul Ehrlich ( Noble Prize Winning Physician and Scientist), Walter Hallstein (European Commission's First President), Walter Gerlach (Theoretical Physicist), Hans Bethe (Nobel Prize-Winning Theoretical Physicist), Alfred Schmidt (a Translator and Philosopher) Klaus Bringmann (German Author and Historian) and Boudewijn Sirks (Professor).
