In the early 1800s, Wilhelm von Humboldt dreamt of a new type of university, where he aspired to have the unity of research and teaching. It was this dream that Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin began to uphold after its establishment in 1810. It provided the ideal ecosystem for research without restrictions while providing a comprehensive education to its students. With these principles of Wilhelm von Humboldt and a select group of contemporaries led a new but crucial practice throughout the world, in which Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin pioneered a new era of academic research in the university.

In 2010, which marked the 200th anniversary of the Humboldt-Universität, numerous events from October 2009 to December 2010 honoured the inception incept ideas of the university’s founding fathers.

In an international comparison, Humboldt-Universität ranks among the top ten German universities. Given the academic stand of the university, it has focused on developing solutions for the problems and issues that plague society. Owing to this, scientists here are continuously involved in research of socially relevant topics and challenges of the future. Courses Offered


What all courses are available to international students?


Humboldt-Universität offers 189 degree courses. An international student can study Bachelor Courses (excluding secondary subjects), Mono Bachelor, Combination Bachelor without Teacher Training Option /Reference, Combination Bachelor with Teacher Training Option /Reference, Consecutive Master courses, Postgraduate and Certificate Studies, Diploma courses in subjects such as Law, Archaeology, Art and Visual History, Social Sciences, Education Studies, Agriculture and Horticulture, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and many more.


Eligibility & Documents Required


What are the eligibility requirements?


University provides detailed information related to the international eligibility requirements; students can visit the programme pages and find specific details. However, a few of the general information related to eligibility requirements are covered below: 

Bachelor requirements

Students aspiring to pursue bachelor’s at Humboldt-Universität must complete school education, including X and X + II standards, with a minimum grade for passing degree, which is equivalent to ‘pass class’.

Master requirements 

Students aspiring to pursue a master’s at Humboldt-Universität must complete a bachelor’s education. Additionally, the university will calculate the grades that the students have achieved during their bachelor’s course. Thus, all students must provide the grade system that their respective institute/university uses for degree during the time of application.

English language requirements

For both bachelor’s and master-level courses, students must provide proof of English language. University accepts the following English certificates: 

IELTS: The university requires a certain minimum value for the IELTS. Uni-ASSIST (application portal) will verify IELTS results online. Therefore, students must upload their certificates (IELTS Test Report Form) to their Uni-ASSIST online account. 

TOEFL: The TOEFL is available in three different variants. The university prescribes the required minimum number of points for all three variants. 

Cambridge English Language Certificates FCE, CAE and CPE: As the university accepts this certificate, Uni-ASSIST’s helps students with verification of the Cambridge English language certificates FCE, CAE and CPE online. To do this, students must send their Candidate ID number and Secret number before the application deadline using their contact form.


What all documents are needed for application?


To pursue higher studies at Humboldt-Universität, students must apply through Uni-ASSIST. The website (https://www.uni-assist.de/) checks international student applications and evaluates documents and certificates required for the application.

The requirement of different documents is depended on the course of choice of students. The requirements may vary from course to course. However, the following are the list of common documents that apply to all students: 

For Bachelor applications

  • School leaving certificate: Submit the certificate and it should include an overview of subjects and grades 

  • Proof of university entrance examination: If students have passed the university entrance examination, they are required to submit proof of the same

  • Proof of previous studiesStudents must submit a complete overview of subjects and grades from their respective college/institute/university

  • Language certificates: Students must provide officially certified copies of language certificates to Uni-ASSIST by post.

For master's applications

  • Proof of your studies: Students must submit their complete degree certificate and an overview of subjects and grades. No parts of the certificate or individual pages may be missing.

  • Your university's grade system: Students must provide the information related to their grade system used by the university for degrees

  • School-leaving certificate/proof of university entrance examination: Students must provide these documents during the application 

  • Language certificates: Students must provide officially certified copies of language certificates to Uni-ASSIST by post

International Baccalaureate (IB)

  • Students with IB diploma must submit an overview of subjects and grades issued by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO)

  • Also, students must furnish certificates from the last two school years in the IB program (all term/semester reports or transcripts)

 


Application & Tuition Fees


Is there any application fees?


Yes, international students must pay handling fees. Fees must be paid irrespective of the result of the checking procedure.

In one application semester following handling fees apply:

Students must pay the fees at Uni-ASSIST application either by bank transfer or by credit card:

•3D Secure credit card (Visa or MasterCard)

•Bank transfer

Note: Sometimes, payments with credit cards from certain countries may not be accepted by the bank for security reasons. In such scenarios, talk to the back and learn the procedure related to international transactions. 


What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?


Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin does not charge any tuition fees. However, as a HU student, applicants will have to pay a semester fee of EUR 300 applicable to all degree students and EUR 250 applicable to exchange students. 

Note: The amounts mentioned above are subjected to change. Applicants are encouraged to check their admission/confirmation letter for the exact amount.

The fee is bifurcated into several separate amounts. The largest portion goes towards the semester ticket of EUR 190. The semester ticket is a seasonal student ticket required for public transport in Berlin. Every HU student is required to purchase a ticket each semester.

Along with this, students must pay EUR 10 for the default membership of Studierendenschaft. Students joining HU will automatically be considered as members of the student body. The benefits of the membership are that students can elect the student parliament and take advantage of the student counselling services offered by StuPa/RefRat.

Another part of the fee is for the Studentenwerk EUR 50. This is a payment made by the students in Berlin towards the services of the student welfare organisation. The organisation is responsible for student dining facilities, Mensa at the universities in Berlin as well as for the dormitories, Wohnheime.

Furthermore, degree students have to pay an additional amount of EUR 50 as administrative fees.

The total amount of the fees must be paid to the account of HU. The account details can be found in the letter of acceptance as well as on the university website. Students can pay via bank transfer or with cash at the Kasse (rooms 1003 – 1006).

Scholarships & Financial Aid


Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?


Students at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin can explore numerous programmes and trusts that provide financial and/or ideational supports. Depending on the requirements of the scholarships, different documents like Letters of Recommendation, SOPs, essays, and certificates, as well as a current CV, may be necessary. Additionally, a completed application form and a cover letter are also usually required.

Bundesausbildungsförderung Nach dem Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAfög)

BAföG is a state-funded student support scheme. Through this scheme, students receive half of the money as a loan (free of interest), and the other half as federal aid, which they are not required to repay. This scheme is fashioned to ease international applicants. 

Germany Scholarship, Deutschlandstipendium

Excellent students from both national and international domains studying at the HU can apply for the Deutschlandstipendium. The scheme offers support of EUR 300 per month for at least two semesters to both bachelor’s and master’s candidates during their period of study.

How do I start my application?


Applicants can apply at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin using any one of the two application paths:

 

  • Apply directly via the online application portal of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or

  • Application via the pre-testing office Uni-ASSIST eV


Note: Applicants have to check the access authorisation, and, on that basis, they will have to proceed with their application. For application, nationality does not matter. The only decisive factor is whether it is a German or foreign access authorisation.


What are the steps to the application process?


Following are the steps involved in the application process at Uni-ASSIST eV. Log in to www.uni-assist.de/ and start the application:

Step 1: Create an account at Uni-ASSIST or at the online portal of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Step 2: Provide certificate documents like school-leaving certificates, mark sheets of the studies completed, including an overview of subjects and grades.

Step 3: Additional application documents may also be required. For example, special application forms, where CV, internship certificates or letters of motivation and letters of recommendation, references, and SOPs are required.

Step 4: Students must furnish their command of the language of instruction in the course. In Germany, the language of instruction is mostly German. There are also English-language courses. But even then, applicants have to prove knowledge of the German language.

Note: Remember that an application cannot be considered unless Uni-ASSIST has received all the required documentation within the prescribed period.

 

 

 


When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?


After the application is submitted, Uni-ASSIST will check that all documents required for the further consideration of the application, later the application data will be forwarded electronically to the Admissions Office for International Students at the Humboldt-Universität. After the successful submission of the application data via u Uni-ASSIST, Humboldt-Universität will send an email, including more information and the status of the application to the applicant.

What are the chances to get into this university?


There is a limited number of study places (5% of the total) on full-time courses leading to a bachelor’s degree or the State Examination is made available to applicants from non-EU countries. Thus, making the admission at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin extremely competitive. The admission of the applicants depends on their qualifications, which are derived from grades obtained in secondary or other previous education.

Part Time Work While Studying


Can I work while studying here?

 

 


Yes, there are paid part-time employment opportunities available for the students studying at Humboldt-Universität. However, employment for students is subject to strict regulations. Also, the opportunity to work and for how long international students are permitted to be employed in Germany depends on the type of residence permit the individual student holds.

International students are required to observe certain restrictions. Students may work for a maximum of 120 'full' days (8 hours per day), or 240 'half' days (4 hours per day) in one year. Part-time employment of this kind does not require a work permit.

 


Campuses & Accommodation


How many colleges and campuses does the university have?


The institutes of the Humboldt-Universität are grouped into three main campuses:

Campus Mitte:  Rich in tradition, Campus Mitte is home to Arts and Humanities, Law, Economics and Business Studies as well as Theology domain of the university.

Campus Nord: The beautiful Campus Nord, is the main center for Life Sciences. The face of the is still being developed. After complete development, several institutions and facilities will be constructed or relocated here to be in the immediate vicinity of the Medical School Charité.

Campus Adlershof: On the modern, high-tech Campus Adlershof center for Mathematics and the Natural Sciences are located. Adlershof is the venue for one of the largest technology parks in Europe and forms an important part of the city for research. Here academics of Humboldt-Universität conduct their research in active exchange with twelve non-university research institutions and over 400 technology-oriented enterprises.

Is on-campus housing available?


In recent times, the housing situation in Germany’s capital city became significantly worse. The demand for the same is consistently growing, and consequently, there are ever fewer affordable rooms available. The growing demand for rooms and the significant increase in rental prices makes it very difficult for students to find a flat in Berlin. Given the situation, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is trying to assist as many students as possible in finding accommodation by allocating them to selected student dormitories in Berlin. University offers accommodation only to exchange students, who are absolving a semester abroad at our university.
