Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is one of the most diverse universities in Germany. This is a public research university situated in Mainz, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany. It is also one of the ten largest universities in Germany. This university was established in 1477. In 1949, the university integrated the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Sciences located off-campus.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz offers a range of studies including History of books, athletics, music, visual arts, theatre, and film. This university also offers many international programs in collaboration with different universities. The Johannes Gutenberg University is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Germany and is also a member of the German U15, a coalition of fifteen major research-intensive and leading medical universities in Germany.

In 2010, the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz was divided into ten faculties and two art colleges. The two art colleges are academies for music and art which are the Hochschule für Musik Mainz and the Kunsthochschule Mainz respectively. They are independent art colleges of the university. All in all, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz comprises of more than 100 institutions and clinics. Most of the university's institutions and facilities are situated on the site of a former anti-aircraft barracks located in a different part of the city, which were constructed in 1938 during wartime.

The university's medical center, Mainz Academy of Arts and the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Sciences are located off-campus. Within the university's campus boundaries there is the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, the Institute of Molecular Biology, the electron accelerator MAMI, the research reactor TRIGA, the botanical garden, a sports stadium, and an indoor swimming pool.

This university has many notable alumni members. Some of the German politicians, who were alumni members of the university are Malu Dreyer( Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate), Rainer Brüderle (Federal Minister for Economics and Technology), Kristina Schröder (Federal Minister of Family and Social Affairs), Franz Josef Jung (Former Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs and former Federal Minister of Defence), Particle physicist Vera Lüth, sculptor Karlheinz Oswald, sports journalist Béla Réthy, political journalist Peter Scholl-Latour.
