Established in 1971, the University of Bremen is an open research university, which is known to be under the Institutional Strategies category. Initially, the university was developed as a science complex. By 1982, the university improved its ranking in research, developed several endowment professorships, and gained national recognition. German Research Foundation has been funding the various research programs and centers at the university. The university participated in a pilot scheme for structural reform from 1996 to 2001. The scheme was funded by Volkswagen Foundation. This also supported the development of communication between the teaching, administration, and research units of the university. The university became a leading institution in digital media studies in Germany.
The university campus provides shared and single apartments to the students for accommodation. It provides all the housing facilities required by the students. The campus features a learning space with multimedia equipment where students can have group studies and practice their digital presentations. The university has a central library within the campus and various other small libraries on and off the campus. The central library consists of thousands of books, journals, and research papers. Also, the students are allowed to access the electronic resources. Other than the canteen, the campus features few cafeterias. Moreover, there are several shopping complexes, insurance companies, and a bank on the campus. All the fests, events, competitions, and quizzes conducted by the university are organized on the campus.

The university is visited by some industry professionals for guest lectures and practical workshops. The students also get a chance to visit the research centers at the campus and work as interns under professional guidance.
