The University of Cologne is a well-recognized university in Germany. It was the 6th university to be established in Central Europe, though it was closed in the year 1798 before getting re-established in 1919. Of late, it is considered to be one of the leading universities of Germany. With 50,000 plus students, it has been now recognized as one amongst the largest Germany universities. In 2020, the University of Cologne was ranked 157th all across the world by Times Higher Education.
Initially, it was composed of the Faculty of Economics, Business, Social Sciences and Medicine. In the year 1920, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts was added to the institution. However, the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics got split up from the Faculty of Humanities in 1955 to form a separate faculty altogether. An erratic increase occurred in 1980 with the affiliation of the two Cologne-based departments of the Rhineland College of Education as the Faculties of Education and of Special Education and from 1987, the Faculty of Therapeutic Pedagogy created.
Divided into 6 faculties, the university, which is located in Cologne, features 200 fields of study. These include Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Science, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Human Science. Peter Grünberg (2007 Nobel Prize winner in Physics), Kurt Alder (1950 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry), Gustav Heinemann (Federal Republic of Germany's President from 1969 to 1974) and Erich Gutenberg (modern German business studies' founder) are a few of the notable members of the alumni network of the university. 11 Faculties have also won Leibniz Prize.
