GRE Score Calculator: GRE or Graduate Record Examination is an examination used as a benchmark to measure the potential of a candidate. Students desirous of studying in the international university must appear in the GRE General test as most universities of the USA and Canada accept the GRE score as a performance measure.

The GRE general test is conducted, generally, on all working days, all through the year. Additionally, the candidate can themselves decide which GRE score is to be shared with which university, using the score-select option.

GRE is conducted in two parts:

The GRE General test comprises of the following sections:

  • Verbal reasoning skills
  • Analytical writing skills
  • Quantitative reasoning skills

GRE Subject Test

  • It is used to test the ability in a specific subject in which you wish to pursue higher education.
  • The subject can be chosen from eight different fields.
  • This test is valid in limited universities for certain specific programs.

Test Focus: The GRE subject test gages undergraduate achievement in 8 specific fields of study.

Taken by: Majorly MS aspirants. Ph.D. Students also take it up but are fewer in comparison.

Taken by: Preferred by Ph.D. or MS aspirants planning to shift the fields of study. Here the majority is Ph.D.

Cost: The cost of a general test is $205.

Cost: GRE subject test costs $150.

Eligibility criteria for GRE

There are no specific eligibility criteria to take the GRE General Exam concerning age, education qualification, experience, quota, etc. The student must only bring the identity card prescribed by GRE to take the exam.

How is GRE scored?

  • The GRE General Test is computer adaptive.
  • The performance in the first section of quantitative and verbal determines the level of difficulty in the next subsection.
  • The score in these sections is one mark for each correct answer.
  • Thus, if the first section is performed well, the next section will be of a higher difficulty level. Giving you the opportunity to core the highest possible score.
  • If, however, the score in the first section is low, the next section will be easier, and the score is earning potential will also be lowered. Read more on GRE Scores, here.

How is your GRE test score calculated?

The GRE General Test scores are calculated in the following manner:

0–6, in half-point increments

An important point to note here is that the GRE score validity is for five years from the date of the GRE test date.

GRE Score Percentiles or Percentile Rank 

When appearing for a GRE general test, along with the score, a percentile rank is also awarded to the student. This percentile score refers to the percentage of test-takers who scored a GRE score lower than yours. For instance, a GRE verbal score of 150 comes up to 47 GRE score percentile, which means that 53percent test-takers scored more than you and 47percent were below you.

There is no particular percentile or score that can be quoted as the perfect good score for GRE. A good score for GRE depends on the type of course or program you wish to pursue and the university you want to get admission in. A good score is simply one that gets you admission to the college of your choice and the course or discipline you wish to learn. However, to put it roughly any score above 75 percentile (in verbal or quantitative) is considered a good score.
