The beginning of Budapest Metropolitan University (METU) dates back to the year 2000 when Budapest College of Communication was founded with state accreditation. The college started operation with a batch of 126 students. It received its current name and the university status on 1st January 2016. At present, it is Hungary's largest private university and art institution and offers accredited and internationally recognized degrees. It consists of nine academic institutes that offer education in a wide variety of fields.
METU has four first-rate campuses across Budapest, Hungary. Nagy Lajos Király Street Campus offers programs in the fields of business, communication, and tourism. This campus houses four huge halls, 30 seminar halls, six computer rooms, Radio METU Studio, the central library, a cafeteria, and a restaurant. Rózsa Street Art Campus offers programs in graphics and design. The campus is home to an art library, several workshops, specialized classrooms and separate studios for ceramics, textile, fashion, carpentry, jewelry and photography courses. Rottenbiller Street Art Campus offers programs in media and motion pictures. It includes workshops, studios, specialized classrooms, cameraman studios, puppet workshops, editor rooms, television classrooms, computer labs, and screening rooms. Egressy Street Campus consists of classrooms, a gym, three seminar rooms, a computer room, a catering classroom, and a teaching kitchen.

The university maintains partnerships with more than 180 local and international educational institutions. These partnerships facilitate excellent student exchange programs. Some exchange partner universities include Karel de Grote University in Belgium, Thomas Bata University in the Czech Republic, Leeds Trinity University in England, TH Köln in Germany, Vistula University in Poland and Mersin University in Turkey. The university also has a dedicated career center that has a record of providing over 800 internship opportunities worldwide.
METU offers students a platform to jumpstart their careers and pursue their professional goals. It has produced numerous distinguished and successful graduates over the years. Dániel Gyurta is one of the university's notable alumni. He is a professional Hungarian swimmer. Tigran Vardanjan used to be a competitive figure skater who won the national championship of 2007-2009. Many other notable names are associated with the university.
