The University College Cork, popularly known as the UCC, was established in the year 1845 and is one of Ireland's leading research institutes. As per the Universities Act 1997, UCC was renamed as the National University of Ireland, Cork. What grants UCC its iconic status is the fact that it is the first university in the world that was conferred with the international green flag for environmental friendliness.
It also went ahead to become the first university to meet up to the ISO 50001 standard in Energy Management in the year 2011. University College Cork began officially as one of the three Queen's colleges in Belfast, Cork and Galway for the advancement of learning in Ireland. It kicked off with 23 professors and 181 students in the disciplines of medicine, arts and law. A year after that, the college came under the umbrella of the Queen's University of Ireland. The choice for the site of the college was due to its connection with Saint Finbar, the patron saint of Cork whose monastery was close by at Gill Abbey Rock.
Although its foundation stone was laid in the year 1845, UCC began operations only in the year 1849. As per the data available from the year 2016, UCC is home to 21,000 students which include 15000 students in the undergraduate programmes and 4400 in postgraduate and research programmes. The University College Cork has a research funding of over 96 million Euros due to its unprecedented status of the leading research institute in Ireland in the faculties of Arts and Celtic Studies, Commerce, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Food Science and Technology. As per the proposed strategy, UCC aims to build a Centre of Excellence to carry out world-class research in the fields of Nano electronics, Food and Health, and Environmental Science. In fact, as per the reports published in the year 2008 by its governing body, UCC was announced to be the first institution in Ireland to conduct research using Embryonic Stem Cells in research.
The Cork Centre for Architectural Education is accredited by the Royal Institute of the architects of Ireland. The College of Medicine and Health at UCC is affiliated to the University College Cork Teaching Hospital which bears the title of the largest medical centre in Ireland. As part of the Humanities facility, students can also study Chinese culture and its language.
