Once you have short-listed your universities and have begun the application process, the next step is to prepare all the application and financial documents. While academic transcripts are the first documents that you should get ready, application documents such as the Letters of Recommendation (LORs), Statement of Purpose (SOP), Personal Statement (PS), Essay, and Resume should be in preparation, simultaneously. While an impressive SOP enables you to tell your story, a well-written LOR supports your story as they act as testimonials. LORs add credibility to your SOP and Resume and highlight your overall personality. It serves as a recognition of your academic or professional presence, as evaluated by your professors or supervisors.

Unlike some countries or universities where LORs are optional, Australian universities have made LORs a compulsory part of the application process. Be it any diploma, undergraduate, or postgraduate programme. Thus, the LORs you decide to universities in Australia need to be impactful and impressive. They should depict you as an individual, along with brief descriptions of your positive attributes and traits. Before deciding on which recommender to choose for LORs, check for any university or course-specific requirements. Specific requirements can differ from university to university or even from course to course within the same university. These requirements are generally related to format, word limit, page lengths, and so on. Ideally, a LOR should not exceed the word limit stipulated by the university; if no limit is given, then you should stick to a one-page length.

LORs for Universities in Australia

Confirm whether the university requires two or three LORs so that accordingly you can choose the number of referees required. The next aspect to note is what type of LOR is required by the university or department. Coursework-based programmes generally required academic LORs only, while research-based or experienced-based courses will require at least one professional LOR. If there are no specific instructions given pertaining to this, then it is ideal to submit one academic and one professional LOR, given that you have sufficient work experience. If you have no prior practical experience, then you can submit two academic LORs. For undergraduate applicants, one LOR should be taken from the subject teacher for the subject that they are applying for in the university. The other LOR can be sourced from either the school counsellor, head-teacher, principal, or another relevant subject teacher.
