Ara Institute of Canterbury is the biggest vocational training establishment in the South Island of New Zealand. It was established in 2016 when education providers CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic consolidated, uniting two renowned associations and over 200 years of collective experience and achievement.

Ara offers 16 courses across 6 streams, namely Design, Performing Arts, Engineering, Management, Hotel Management, Media and Mass Communication and across 7 degrees like BMM, BMC, BAM, B.Tech and BA

On-campus Accommodation

  • Ara has campuses in Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru and each of these regions offers a range of accommodation options. You may decide to go flatting or opt for private board, or you might choose to live in a homestay.
  • In Christchurch, Ara’s ?tautahi House (right across the road from the City campus) offers apartment-style accommodation with other students in a flat share. Preference will be given to students enrolling in full-time study, and those relocating to Christchurch for study from other regions.
  • International students are encouraged to stay with a homestay family when they first arrive in New Zealand to study. Alternatively, you can stay in hostels, flats, or other accommodation options.
  • The ?tautahi House(O-House) student accommodation facility is operated by Ara Institute of Canterbury, located centrally on the corner of St Asaph and Madras Streets (Christchurch). The accommodation comprises five blocks in four purpose built buildings –two built in 1995, and three opened in January 2017. In total, the facility has 36 flats with a maximum capacity of 192resident-students.
