Founded in 1964, the University of Waikato is a public institution for higher education and research in New Zealand. Established as the Hamilton Teachers' College under a petition passed in 1956, the institution was given the university status in 1964. The institution has affiliations from the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL), EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA).
Located in Hamilton, the university's main campus spreads over 158 acres of land. The campus features administrative offices, laboratories, classrooms, libraries, residences and recreational facilities. It also owns a satellite campus in Tauranga. The library complex of the university consists of three libraries across the campuses. These libraries possess over a million print volumes and about 275,000 e-resources to support teaching, research and learning. Other facilities featured on each campus include a gym, medical centre, athletic fields, a student centre, a dairy and swimming pools.

On the other hand, the university manages two accommodations in Tauranga, including Mayfair Court Apartments and Durham Mews Apartments. The university has seven faculties, one school and one college offering a plethora of programmes in arts, social science, mathematics, education, health, business, language and mass communication, engineering and management. It provides courses in 135 subjects such as anthropology, psychology, applied linguistics, aquaculture, biotechnology, communication design and data analytics. The university has academic partnerships with numerous educational institutes and organizations across the globe, which facilitates exchange programmes to extend international exposure and enhanced learning to students. Also, the university has many industry partners. Currently, around 12,642 students are pursuing different under-graduate, doctoral and post-graduate degree programmes at the institution. It is home to more than 2000 international students from over 80 countries across the world.

Jacinda Ardern, the present Prime Minister of New Zealand, is a celebrated alumnus of the university.
