Garner spoke at length about the college ranking and accreditation, the admission process, eligibility criteria, course and fee structure and job opportunities post-program completion were discussed with candidates in the session.

Q. Who should apply to American University?

A. American University is looking for students who have a strong quantitative background. The university is not very hard on students having work experience. Though standardized tests are optional for students who are applying to American University, however, they highly encourage all their students to submit either a GMAT or a GRE score with their application to their MBA and MS programs. The college has no preference for one vs. the other test. The average scores for the university are typically near 600+ for the GMAT and are typically looking for above the 60th percentile on both the verbal and the quant for the GRE. The MS in Analytics program is STEM-designated.

Q. What are the eligibility criteria for admission to MS/MBA programs at American University?

A. Candidates looking for admission to the American University are required to satisfy the following, the university requires candidates to have a three- year bachelor's degree from India and either a 100+ TOEFL or a 7.0+ IELTS for direct admission to any of their graduate programs. Scores are valid for 5 years and the university encourages students to take them when they feel they will give their best performance on the exam(s). For those under the minimum language requirement but otherwise qualified, the university offers a 1 or 2 semesters intensive English program prior to joining some of the programs (not MBA or Analytics).

Q. What is the intake session for students wanting to apply at American University?

A. All programs at American University have a Fall intake. The Spring intake is for Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, and Tax programs only.

Q. What is the cost of pursuing an MBA Program from American University? Are there any scholarships for the same?

A. The total tuition cost of pursuing an MBA program is approximately $87,000 USD. Every student is considered for merit-based scholarships when they apply to the program. No additional application materials are required. Scholarships range from $5,000 to full-tuition coverage for the MBA program and up to $15,000 for the MS programs. Q. How important is work experience for admission to American University?

A. Typically for the MBA program, students are required to have, on average, 4.5 years of post-undergraduate work experience. The university strongly looks for at least 2+ years in their applicants. Many of the MS programs do not require work experience. The university has MS programs in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Tax, Real Estate, Sustainability Management (STEM-designated), and Analytics (STEM-designated).

Q. Is there any accommodation provided by American University?

A. We do not offer on-campus housing for graduate students. Our students tend to live near campus and Washington, DC has a great mass-transit system including metro rail, bus, bike share, and is also quite walkable. Students tend to live near a metro or bus line or close enough to campus to bike or walk. The cost of living in DC can vary, based on location, amenities, roommates, etc. Students should plan on rent being anywhere from $900/month+. Cost guides can be found at

Q. Could you tell us about the popular programs in detail?

A. The Master of Science in Analytics (MSAN) program is 33 credits (each course is 3 credits, except for the capstone which consists of two 1.5 credit courses). There are 6 required courses and 4 elective courses. Full-time students can complete the program in one calendar year. Part-time students typically take 2 years (or longer).
