Named after William Chalmers, a major benefactor, Chalmers University of Technology was established in Gothenburg in 1829 as an industrial school "Chalmersska Slojdeskolan" to provide education to poor children. Industrialist Carl Palmstedt was appointed as its first president.
The university has been certified as an 'Engaged University' by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU). It holds the membership of the European University Association (EUA) and the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER). Currently, the university comprises 13 departments dedicated to various disciplines of education. Also, there are a number of centers, national competence centers as well as other centers which cooperate across traditional departmental boundaries at the university.

The university has over 60,000 alumni across the world including many notable names. Gustaf Dalen is a physicist who won a Nobel Prize and invented the Dalen light and the AGA cooker. Ludvig Strigeus is a successful programmer who developed software like BitTorrent, Spotify, and OpenTTD. Gert Wingardh is a successful architect who owns the firm Wingardh arkitektkontor. Leif Johansson is the chairman of AstraZeneca plc., the former CEO and president of the Volvo Group, and the former chairman of Ericsson. Linn Berggren is popular for being the former member of Ace of Base, a well-known pop music band. Peter Nordin is a successful computer scientist and author. Jan Wareby works at Ericsson as the senior vice president. Many other distinguished personalities are associated with the university.
