ETH Zurich was founded in 1855 as Polytechnikum. Also known as Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the university was renamed to ETH Zurich in 1911. The university was initially established as a center of knowledge and innovation. It has 16 departments that offer high-quality education in various academic fields. Along with imparting theoretical knowledge, it also strives to develop practical know-how and professional skills.

ETH Zurich has two campuses. The main campus is located in the Zurich city center and the second campus is situated on Hönggerberg, which rests on the city's outskirts. The Hönggerberg campus is home to the departments of civil engineering, chemistry, biology, architecture, physics, and materials science. Both the campuses have the first-rate infrastructure that facilitates efficient research and learning. They have well-equipped laboratories, spacious lecture theatres, libraries, and huge student workshops. The campuses also offer students a chance to participate in various recreational and extra-curricular activities like chess, table-tennis, dance, and meditation.

ETH Zurich has over 100,000 alumni across the world, and most of them are working at prestigious national and international firms. The world-famous scientist, Albert Einstein, has been a student at the university and also worked as a teacher there. The university has numerous other Nobel Prize-winning alumni like Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, Felix Bloch, Heinrich Rohrer, Georg Bednorz, Alfred Werner, Richard Ernst, Tadeus Reichstein and Werner Arber. Further, Pritzker Prize, Turing Award and Fields Medal winners are also associated with the university. Apart from academic achievers, ETH Zurich has also produced many world champions and Olympic medalists.
