It was established in November 2011 following a merger between two institutes, namely Barnet College and Southgate College.

The main aim of the college is to train its students to meet the skill requirements of the industry. Job opportunities and industry experience are part of most courses that aim at giving students a competitive edge while looking for a job or securing a place at the institute.

The Wood Street campus at the heart of Barnet maintains an exquisite centre for its learners, which went through a £50 million redevelopment in September 2010. The Colindale campus provides vocational and skill development courses focussed around beauty, hairdressing, and construction. It was established in August 2016. The Southgate campus provides vocational and academic courses and offers opportunities for various sports activities. It also runs automotive and electrical workshops, and has a special Centre for Excellence for people with special needs, disabilities or learning difficulties. The hospitality house offers specialized provisional training in culinary art and hospitality to its students.
Well known alumni of the institute include Nicko McBrain who is a drummer for the heavy metal band, Iron Maiden; Peter Banks, guitarist of Yes, Flash, etc.; Ozwald Boateng, a fashion designer; Emma Bunton, aka 'Baby Spice' singer and member of pop group Spice Girls; Rick Will, a bassist for rock bands Foreigner, Bad Company and The Jones Gang; Andy Summers, a singer and guitarist for rock bands - The Police, Soft Machine and The Animals.
