De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester, England was founded in 1870 and came to be known as De Montfort University in 1992. Courses Offered

What all courses are available to international students?

DMU offers more than 300 courses in areas such as Business, Law, Art, Design, Humanities, Media, Engineering, Energy, Computing, Sciences, and Social Sciences. 

International Incorporated Bachelors (IIB): It is a four-year programme that offers a great foundation for international students in strengthening their English language abilities and providing knowledge on the important concepts of their chosen program. The first year of IIB is known as International Year Zero (IYZ) taught in DMUIC. After the successful completion of IYZ, students continue to study directly at DMU.

International Incorporated Masters (IIM): The IIM course is for the students who do not able to get direct entry to the post-graduate programs at DMU.

DMU offers both full-time and part-time study options to students.

All international applicants to DMU must meet the university’s minimum IELTS requirement of 5.5 or equivalent. In case an applicant does not meet these requirements, DMU offers them a pre-session English course to be completed immediately before a student enters the first/second stage of the selected course. Graduate applicants require an undergraduate degree with 55-69 per cent marks to stand eligible for admissions.

Application & Tuition Fees

Is there any application fees?

The application fee of £16—20 must be paid when you submit your application.

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

The course fee is as follows:

  • UG: £13,750-£14,250
  • PG: £12,600-£17,280
  • PhD: £12,200-£12,700

An applicant might have to pay a bench fee in addition to tuition fees in case of some research programs. If the research involves additional costs, bench fees are applicable.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

DMU International Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of a £4,000 tuition fee deposit. These are limited in number. DMU Sports Scholarship is open for international students with a passion for sports. 

New international students, both full-time and part-time undergraduate or postgraduate programs can be eligible for an International Scholarship Award. Students must have received an offer letter from the university, and should have accepted the same. They should also have paid 50 percent of the gross tuition fee to DMU. To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must not have applied to courses with fees lower than the lowest standard international fee. Those who are not eligible for the scholarship are International Year Zero, International First Year and Incorporated Masters applicants.

However, such students can apply for DMU International College awards. The decisions taken by the DMU International Office regarding scholarships are final. Successful scholarship awardees are notified by email. A student can only be in receipt of one De Montfort University scholarship.  However, the university reserves the right to cancel any award at any time which has been claimed fraudulently.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) scholarship is offered to outstanding students who show a passion towards equality, diversity, and inclusion rights.

Sustainability Scholarship aims to support high-calibre outstanding students who want to make a difference to their society. An applicant needs to go through a selection process to avail this scholarship. International students can gain the skills and networking required to deal with sustainability challenges in their home countries, in the UK or anywhere else in the world.

Early Payment Discount can be availed through a £4,000 tuition fee deposit.

Chevening Scholarship helps outstanding emerging leaders from different parts of the world to pursue one-year Masters course in the UK.

Admission Process

When do the admissions start?

The application process varies on the basis of the level of study you seek, and on the condition if you are a UK or international student. The DMU programs admissions are accepted for both September or January intakes.

How to start the application process?

You need to download a free application form through DMU Online Portal and the undergraduate students can apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) using the UCAS Institution Code: DEM/D26. You need to prepare the following documents:

  • A copy of your qualifications
  • A copy of your English language certificate  
  • A copy of your passport
  • One reference for undergraduate study/ two references for postgraduate study

The online application process involves some simple steps, which are given below:

  • Download the free application form
  • Prepare the required documents (listed above)
  • Fill in all the relevant details asked on all the pages
  • Return the application and documents to the Admissions Office at

Step 1: Fill in personal details and sponsor/ parent details.

Step 2: Fill in course details, education history, and English proficiency.

Step 3: Fill in details related to tuition fees, insurance, additional information, and others.


When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?

After receiving your application, the university will consider your grades and personal statement. If you meet the entry criteria, the university will send you either an unconditional offer or a conditional offer. An unconditional offer is where your seat will be reserved at the university, which you may accept or decline. A conditional offer is where there are outstanding documents that you still need to submit to meet the rest of the entry criteria. However, in case you are not able to meet the entry criteria for the selected course, but are suitable for another course, you will be considered for alternative course, if possible.

How difficult is it to get an admission?

The University has a diverse student body, thereby allowing greater sharing of knowledge and experiences among peers for holistic learning. More than 2,700 international students from 130 countries select DMU as their study destination. Thus, it is a crucible of different cultures and backgrounds. The International Office works closely with the overseas representatives to help international students with the application and offer process. 

Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

DMU allows its international students to work part-time during their studies. Studying in the UK for more than six months, the students get the permission to work up to 20 hours per week. This enables the students to gain experience, meet new people, enhance their communication skills, and also earn some extra money. The campus-based Unitemps recruitment agency provides paid work opportunities, both in and around the campus.

International applicants can benefit from two types of visas for UK studies:

  • Short-term Study Visa: This is valid for a course of up to six months or an English language programme up to 11 months. Therefore, it is only helpful in case of a short-duration course.
  • Tier 4 Visa: This valid for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course of more than six months. International students will be issued a travel vignette to enter the UK. Thereafter, A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is given in the UK, which should be collected within 10 days of arriving in the country. DMU requires its international students to present the BRP before enrolment.

Campuses & Accommodation

How many campuses does the university have?

DMU is the only campus. DMUIC is located in the heart of DMU campus, close to Leicester. It is only an hour away from London via train. DMUIC offers full support to the students in their on-going degree studies.  

Is on-campus housing available? 

The student accommodations are located near the campus and the city centre. DMU guarantees accommodation for international students who are able to qualify the criteria. Contracts for international students begin in September for International Welcome Week. 

DMU has 10 halls of residence. You can choose your contract lengths to suit your needs, with prices ranging from £99 to £197 per week. All the halls are self-catered, and furnished with a bedding pack including a duvet, pillow and bedsheets. Other facilities include internet, 24 hours electricity, and security.

You need to reserve a room after which you will receive an email containing details of your provisional booking. Unite students will email you separately to confirm your booking. This will involve completing the tenancy agreement and making the full payment. You must complete this process within seven days to confirm your booking.
