A public research institution, Lancaster University was established by the Royal Charter in 1964. It is among the very few UK universities with a collegiate system. When incepted, the university was based at St. Leonard’s Gate and in 1968, the campus was shifted to South Lancaster’s Bailrigg. In the beginning, it had colleges – Cartmel, County, Lonsdale, and Bowland. Later on in the year 1990, a few more were added, namely – Fylde, Pendle, Grizedale, Furness, and Graduate colleges. At present, there are nine colleges that offer a total of 18 research programs.

Students at Lancaster University have access to the best internet facilities, with the institution ranking 8th best university in the UK for Wi-Fi and internet. It was also adjudged the 14th best in the UK for employment prospects. The university has constantly maintained a top position in the international league chart. It has remained among the best 15 out of 120 universities in the UK in the three main domestic league tables. It has ranked 122nd in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 2022, and in the QS World University Rankings, 2023, it has obtained the 146th spot. 91% of Lancaster’s research has been independently rated as internationally excellent in the REF 2021.

Located only three miles away from Lancaster city centre, the university has its own art gallery, theatre, and concert series. Taking care of the students’ basic needs, salons, supermarkets, a bakery, a coiffeur, and much more are made available inside the campus itself. There are a total of nine colleges, offering numerous courses and all equipped with Wi-Fi-enabled study areas, gaming zone, etc.

Since 2010, Lancaster’s accommodation has been adjudged the Best University Hall at the UK’s National Student Housing Awards. Around 7,000 bed spaces are available to students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses and to families as well. The university living spaces are divided into four main categories – ensuite (3,522 with private bathroom facilities), standard rooms (1,430 rooms with shared W/C and shower facilities, townhouse rooms (515 rooms, with shared W/C and shower facilities), and self-contained studios (144 units, with private W/C and a kitchenette). Students can also rent rooms in traditional houses, modern apartments, etc. Students and staff can commute to local areas and other places via buses and coach services.

In 2021, £5.7m was the scholarships and bursary amount awarded. Students from 51 nations received scholarships. The Lancaster Global Scholarship is given as a tuition fee waiver, for undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, to international students with good academic achievements. These are directly awarded provided they meet the set requirements. International students enrolling for the university’s UG or PG taught courses are awarded a scholarship amount of £5,000 for the first year. MBA students are awarded £8,500 as a scholarship for the first year. The British Council and Foreign and Commonwealth Office also offer many funding opportunities to international students. Those pursuing a master’s or a PhD program are also offered funding by the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The university has a notable list of alumni who have gained recognition in their respective disciplines. Around 150,000 alumni are residing in more than 180 nations. Some of those who have made it big in their respective domains are Rainer Hersch (actor, writer and comedian), Sam Hodges (Twitter’s current head of communication), Ralph Ineson (English actor famous for his role in Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Star Wars), Edd Kimber (food writer and TV personality), James May (journalist and TV presenter), Ranvir Singh (journalist).
