Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

The immigration laws in the United Kingdom have become more rigid in recent years, and non-immigrant permits such as the Student Visa have been hugely impacted. If an international student does not follow the UKBA's laws, they risk being deported. The following are the limitations on working part-time and on a Tier 4 student visa in the United Kingdom:

  • For anyone pursuing a degree or higher, a maximum of 20 hours of paid/unpaid work each week is allowed.
  • For language centre students, a maximum of 10 hours of paid or unpaid work each week is allowed during the course term.
  • During breaks, full-time employment is approved.
  • You will not be able to serve full-time until you get a work permit (Tier 2).
  • Self-employment, as well as some freelance or consulting job, is prohibited.

Check that your Tier 4 (general) visa status requires you to work in the UK before starting any part-time work, internship, or volunteer work. Many universities and colleges encourage international students to work no more than 15 hours a week to maintain a work-study balance. For any query related to this, applicants are encouraged to contact the university’s mentor or a foreign student service officer.
