In 1862, the Plymouth School of Navigation was established. The School of Navigation was then re-named Plymouth’s College of Technology in 1962 and was granted polytechnic status in 1970. Then, Plymouth Polytechnic was awarded university status in 1992 and the name was then, changed to the University of Plymouth. It has received a Queen’s Anniversary prize on three occasions. Plymouth Uni has received this prize recently only, for its world-leading microplastics discovery work in 2019.

If we talk about Plymouth University world ranking, then it is placed at #541 in the best global universities categories by U.S. News & World Report. In the QS World University Rankings 2022, Plymouth Uni is placed at #601-650th position. The University of Plymouth rankings in the UK are such that it ranks at #41 in 2022 by The Guardian and #69 in The Complete Guide 2022.

The University of Plymouth’s main campus, also known as the City Centre campus is home to the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business, Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty of Health. It is also home to the University of Plymouth Students’ Union. Marine station is also situated within walking distance of the City centre campus. The North Plymouth campus is used by the Faculty of Health. It offers a great variety of halls to choose from. These halls are University-managed residences and provide a safe and friendly environment to students. In these halls, social events are arranged in order to create greater communities. 24/7 security is also available for the safety of students. These halls are located on campus or within the nearby Student Village. Students can also go for private sector accommodation.

A number of the University of Plymouth scholarships are available for international students. Some scholarships are automatically awarded after applying while for others, students need to check the eligibility requirements. To reward the great achievement of students, Undergraduate International Student scholarship, International Academic Excellence scholarship, GREAT Scholarships, Postgraduate Taught Student Scholarship, School of Psychology – International Postgraduate Platinum Scholarship, etc are provided.   

The notable alumni of Plymouth Uni include names like Philip Payton (Historian), Michael Underwood (Television presenter), Steve Augarde (Children’s author), Ellen Levy (Multimedia Artist and Scholar), Monty Halls (BBC Wildlife Presenter), Jane Wilson-Howarth (Travel writer and Physician), and politicians like Laura Anne Jones, Mark Williams, and Darius J. Pearce. The University of Plymouth alumni also include a prominent personality, Seb Clover (the world’s youngest single-handed cross-Atlantic sailor).
