The University of Bath is a public university established in 1886 as Merchant Venturers Technical College. It received the Royal Charter in 1966 and became a full fledge university by the name of the University of Bath It is recognised for its excellence in research facilities and its four faculties: Management, Science, Humanities and Social Science, and Engineering and Design. A total of 87 per cent of the university's research has been defined as world-leading. In 2011, the research findings into child poverty and support for vulnerable people won a Queen's Anniversary Prize. The university's research grants and contracts portfolio is worth around £150 million.

What all courses are available to international students?

The University offers a broad range of master's courses and research degrees. Subjects include engineering, design, humanities, social science, management and science. Bath carries out research that makes a difference to society - like helping children with chronic pain, protecting people from cyber-attacks, improving access to justice for autistic people, and researching ways to help with the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The University provides over 190 bachelor's courses and over 100 graduate courses in the four faculties of Management, Science, Humanities and Social Science, and Engineering and Design at the university. The doctoral-level programmes include Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Integrated PhD, Professional Doctorates and Master of Philosophy (MPhil).

University of Bath International Foundation Year:

The University of Bath International Foundation Year (IFY) is a one-year full-time course, beginning in September each year. The course is prepared to help students transition into their chosen degree at the University of Bath. If students achieve the necessary grades at the end of the course, they will be guaranteed an automatic entry into the first year of their chosen degree course. The application must be completed through UCAS.

Who can apply for the IFY?

All international students whose qualifications are not considered for direct entry to a degree programme owing to their home country’s education system, or for those who have studied the correct qualification but failed to meet the standard required for direct entry. The course is designed to cover the key principles, theories, and practical skills which are the standard entry criteria for the University of Bath, and is broadly based on the A-level syllabus. 

Bath College

The University of Bath has accredited Bath College to teach the International Foundation Year. Later after completing the course, the students then progress from Bath College to their intended undergraduate degree programme at the University of Bath. However, the entry is provided only if they achieve the progression grades in the required subjects.

What are the eligibility requirements?

University of Bath International Foundation Year

The eligibility criteria for undergraduate courses are as follows: 

  • Higher Secondary Certificate: Standard 12th with 65% average with a minimum of 55% in all subjects for national boards (HSSC, CBSE, and CISCE) 
  • 70% average from State Boards with a minimum of 55% in all subjects 

Note: Please note, all students must have mathematics at the equivalent of GCSE grade C/grade 4. Also, for IFY pathways and target degree courses where mathematics is an essential subject, a student must score 70% in mathematics, and 60% for IFY pathways and target degree courses where mathematics is not an essential subject.  


The eligibility criteria and English language requirements for undergraduate courses depend on the chosen course. Visit and search for a course to find the criteria. The eligibility criteria for undergraduate courses are as follows:

  • Higher Secondary School Certificate (XII Standard)
  • An average of 80% across four subjects with 85% in one subject

Note: The university does not consider Physical Education as one of the four subjects. Also, the aforementioned requirements are for the CBSE and CISCE boards. Please contact the university if the qualifications are with any other board. 

English language requirements (any one of the following):

  • IELTS: 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in all components
  • The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 69 with no less than 62 in any element
  • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): 185 with no less than 176 in all elements
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 185 with no less than 176 in all elements
  • TOEFL IBT: 100 overall with a minimum 24 in all 4 components


The eligibility criteria and English language requirements for graduate courses depend on the chosen course. Visit the official website and search for a course to find the criteria. Though every course has its specific requirement, however, there are a few common requirements for graduate courses, which are as follows: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a final overall result of at least a First Class

English language requirements (any one of the following)

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components
  • The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any component
  • TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components


The eligibility criteria for MBA courses are as follows:

English language

  • IELTS (academic): 7.0 (at least 6.5 in each of the four components)
  • PTE Academic (Pearson): 69 (at least 62 in each component)
  • TOEFL IBT 100 overall (at least 24 in each component)

Note: The results must be no more than two years old from the start date of the MBA.

  • Choose to lead the development of a research project
  • Choose to apply for a defined, academic-led project

To apply, students must use the online application form. On the application form, they must provide:

  • Personal details
  • Passport details if they need a tier 4 visa
  • The date they plan to start
  • Plans for finance and funding
  • Education details
  • Proof of English level if English is not the first language
  • Details of intended research and the names of intended supervisors
  • The names and contact details of referees, including at least one from academia

What all documents are needed for the application?

Each course has its own requirements, however, there are a few common documents that are applicable to all courses. The documents required are as follows: 

  • Evidence of students’ English level, as reflected on their valid IELTS/TOEFL certificate 
  • Complete school transcripts and examination certificates 
  • The relevant pages of their passport including the information page and any relevant visas 
  • Recommendation letter(s) from students’ teachers at school or other organisations 

Note: All documents must be in English, and must be signed and dated by the school. Additionally, if it is a translation, it is crucial to show the translator’s signature, the date of translation, and the name and stamp of the translation organisation. Furthermore, it must include a statement with an accurate translation of the original document.

Is there any application fees?

Yes. The application fees for the undergraduate programmes are £22.5 and £27 for multiple courses. It is £60 for the graduate programmes.

Chancellor's Scholarship

The Chancellor's Scholarship is provided to the overseas students who have demonstrated academic brilliance in their studies. The eligible overseas students will receive a first-year tuition fee waiver worth up to £2,000.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for Chancellor's Scholarship a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must be a new first year overseas fee-paying student
  • They must achieve A Level grades of at least A* A* A, or equivalent

Note: Students are considered automatically eligible for the Chancellor's Scholarship and the International Baccalaureate 50th Anniversary Scholarship when they apply for higher studies at the University of Bath and meet the eligibility criteria.

The International Baccalaureate 50th Anniversary Scholarship

The scholarship is an award provided to first-year students studying the International Baccalaureate who have demonstrated academic excellence in their studies. Through this scholarship, the tuition fee up to £8,000 is waived off. All overseas students attaining this award will receive a first-year tuition fee waiver worth up to £6,000.

Eligibility Criteria

To receive the International Baccalaureate 50th Anniversary Scholarship, a student must:

  • Be assessed as a new first year overseas fee-paying student
  • Accept a place on a full-time campus based undergraduate course
  • Achieve 42 points or higher in the International Baccalaureate (IB)

The Doctor Shakuntala Gokhale Award 

Under the Doctor Shakuntala Gokhale scholarship, an award of £1,400 is provided to students in their first year of study. This scholarship is specifically awarded to a gifted student from India.

Eligibility Criteria

To receive the Doctor Shakuntala Gokhale Award a student must:

  • Be assessed as a new first year full-time overseas fee-paying student
  • Be an Indian national or resident 
  • Have completed the Indian XII grade

Note: There is no application process for this award. The university will select the most academically gifted student upon confirmation of examination results at the end of August. For specific scholarship requirements, kindly visit the university website.

When do the admissions start?

What is Pathway to Bath?

Pathway to Bath is a free, online curriculum enrichment programme created to help students in developing important-key skills for university study. Through this curriculum, they can complete their research project (or similar) while simultaneously work alongside experienced university staff in the real research environment.

Pathway to Bath programme is available for A-level and BTEC students.

Benefits of Pathway:

  • Support will be provided to students in completing a research project by the university staff during the online course
  • Support will be provided to students in making a competitive application to study at Bath 
  • University staff will also support in writing a personal statement, understanding the UCAS process, student finance, and much more

Who can apply:

Academically sound XII grade students who wish to pursue their higher studies at Bath can apply for the Pathway to Bath programme. 

When applying, students are required to provide details of their current qualifications (for instance: A-Levels or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma) and previous qualifications (such as GCSEs). Students must submit a statement to explain why they want to study Pathway to Bath. They must provide contact details of parents. Finally, students must provide the contact details of a teacher for a reference letter.

What are the steps to the application process? Does this involve an interview round?

Step 1: After registering, the applicant will get a Username and Password. Follow it to log in and apply:

Step 2: The applicant needs to provide personal information. After completion of each section, a red checkmark will appear to indicate the completion of the same.

Step 3: Likewise, in this step, the applicant must fill in all the information requested in the Education, Employment, and Statement tabs. When the applicant gets a red checkmark next to each tab, only then the section will be completed.

Step 4: After filling in the information in all the tabs, the applicant will have to pay the application fees to complete the application process.


For some of the courses, the university will invite the applicants to attend an interview. This happens when the application looks suitable, but the applicant is pursuing a qualification that is difficult to assess on paper. University can also invite to attend an interview if the applicant has a less typical educational history, and the admission committee is unable to consider the application using the normal criteria.

Part-Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

Yes, students at the University of Bath can work part-time while studying. However, students on a full-time Student visa are limited to certain time restrictions for the work that they do: 

  • A maximum 10 hours per week in term-time if their course is below degree level 
  • A maximum 20 hours per week in term-time for degree level 
  • A full-time role during vacation (and over 30 hours per week if they are working at the University of Bath) 

Note: For undergraduate and postgraduate students, the January inter-semester break is considered vacation time. 

Students cannot work in the UK when: 

  • They are on a part-time Student visa 
  • They have any type of visitor visa or a Short-term Study Visa 
  • They are suspended or have withdrawn from the course

Campuses & Accommodation

Over the past decade, the University of Bath has invested over £450 million in a range of high-quality facilities for its campus. This includes a £10.9 million arts and management building, and a £35 million Sports Training Village. Students can take a tour through one of the Virtual Open Days. 


The University provides international students with specifically designed comfortable accommodations, both on-campus and within the city. There is a range of housing options to suit individual budgets and lifestyles, including students with disabilities and medical conditions. 


Students can join one of 50 sports clubs run by The SU. Each club welcomes new members, whether they are a novice or a professional. All students can access the Sports Training Village, which hosts a gym, sports, and fitness centre, as well as coaching, physiotherapy, and sports science services.

University Managed Accommodation (UMA)

An applicant can apply for University Managed Accommodation only with a firm offer from the university and when any of these are true:

  • Applicant must be in the first year, studying the full-time undergraduate course and applying for accommodation for the first time
  • Applicant must be a new full-time Foundation Degree in Sports Performance students
  • Applicant must be a new MA Contemporary European Studies (Euromasters) student
