What all courses are available to international students?


The university provides undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a variety of disciplines, including Accounting, Management, Biochemistry, Sciences, Banking, Publishing, Criminology, Journalism, Human Rights, Theatre, Data Analytics, and Engineering, to meet the needs of students from all over the world. What are the eligibility requirements?


Essex has country-specific requirements for international students. For Indian aspirants, the eligibility requirements are:

UG Requirements

The majority of Bachelor's degree programs would take into account a total of 60% of the top four subjects from Indian high school diplomas. You will not usually need a different English language examination score if you reach 70% in English from a CBSE or CISCE exam board certification. Some courses have more stringent entrance qualifications and other admissions standards.

PG Requirements

The bulk of Postgraduate Taught Masters would accept candidates with a Bachelor degree with a 50% or 5.3/10 from a Band 1 or Band 2 institution and a 55% or 5.8/10 from all other institutions.

Is there any application fees?


Undergraduate aspirants need to pay a non-refundable processing fee of GBP 20 when applying through the UCAS portal. For multiple choice, an extra amount of GBP 26 is added to the final amount. The university charges application fee for postgraduate courses.


What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

Admission Process


When do the admissions start?


Essex offers admissions in the Fall and Spring intakes. Application process for UG programs usually begins in September and the deadlines are as follows:

PG applicants are advised to apply as soon as possible. For most PG programs, the admissions usually start by October and the deadline fall in August (next year). International students should also take into account any deadlines for funding applications, such as scholarships.

How to apply to UG courses?


Undergraduate applications can be made either via UCAS or through the university’s Direct Admissions form. If you are applying to other UK institutions as well, or already have a UCAS application, you cannot use the Direct Admissions form.Applications through UCAS are made online via the UCAS Apply and Track Service. Here, you will be able to fill out your details, upload personal statement, choose the universities you would like to apply for, and track your application status.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?


UG decisions are released as per UCAS timelines and for PG courses, the university aims to reply within two weeks. PG applicants will have 30 days to respond to the university's offer. Once UG applicants receive a decision from all their choices, UCAS will ask them to accept one offer as their firm (first) choice and one offer as their insurance (second) choice via UCAS Track.

Part Time Work While Studying


Can I work while studying here?


If your Tier 4 visa (Entry Clearance or Biometric Residence Permit) allows it, you can work as long as you have not finished studying. You will have restricted working hours and also, the type of job you can take. The UK government enables most Tier 4 students to work in the UK. However, the type of job you may do is restricted, even as a work placement and this restriction lasts for the duration of your Tier 4 Visa. Do note that the ‘wrap up' period after your course ends.

You are not allowed to:

  • Be self-employed or to run a company.
  • Work as a professional athlete and as a fitness instructor.
  • Function as a talented performer.
  • Get a full-time permanent position (except as an elected SU sabbatical officer).
  • If you are pursuing the foundation programme, you cannot practice as a doctor or dentist in school.

Your Tier 4 Visa should have a provision for you to work the following hours per week throughout the school year:

  • Students pursuing a degree: 20 hours
  • Students pursuing anything less than a degree: 10 hours

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?


The Colchester Campus is the primary and biggest of the three campuses, with over 15,000 students from almost 130 countries. The university, which is spread out across 200 acres, has various lodging opportunities in addition to providing a gym and indoor/outdoor courts. It also houses over 20 businesses as well as the carbon-neutral Essex Business School. In addition, the university operates 30 study centres and universities in a variety of areas.

Is on-campus housing available?


The two major costs of studying at the University of Essex are your tuition costs and housing expenses. The area in which you reside will have a significant impact on how much money you will require while studying at Essex. The university offers a variety of accommodation options so that students can choose the most suitable one as per their needs. Rooms are normally let for the full academic year, i.e., from late September to the end of June. The amount of rent you pay will generally include the following:

  • Cleaning of communal areas (such as kitchens)

Most flats are mixed-gender, although single-gender flats are available, and the university offers a few single-occupancy adapted rooms as well. First year UG students are guaranteed accommodation for the first year only. However, applicants need to ensure that their accommodation application is received by the published deadline.
