One of the top public research universities in the U.K., the University of Southampton is best-known for its innovative learning system. The university is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. The University of Southampton finds its origins in the Hartley Institution that was opened in 1862. It became a University College in 1902 and finally in 1952, it became the University of Southampton after the granting of a royal charter. It is interesting to note that the University of Southampton was one of the first universities to embrace digital resources, and create online-only courses.

The University of Southampton courses are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation year levels in various disciplines. The different departments of the university include the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Social Sciences that offer more than 300 courses. Apart from the core subjects, Southampton also offers some exclusive areas of study including audiology, acoustical engineering, archaeology, criminology, optoelectronics, and gerontology.

The University of Southampton admissions include a total of 21,395 students. Out of these, 11,205 students were female and 10,190 were male. 7,070 students were enrolled in postgraduate courses and 14,325 were enrolled in undergraduate courses. The university has more than 6,500 international students from over 135 countries. The University of Southampton acceptance rate between 77% and 84%, which indicates that the university is not very selective. The University of Southampton has an Indian Society that aims at promoting Indian tradition and culture through annual events.

The University of Southampton alumni base includes more than 265,000 graduates from more than 180 countries. Tips: I have learnt to do things on my own. There was not much cultural shift as I interacted with many Indian students. I got a scholarship of 5000 pounds on the basis of my merit. I am highly satisfied with the university and my course is quite in demand as far as the country is concerned it's fine.

Don't think twice before joining the University of Southampton

Tips: Ranked 21st in the United Kingdom, the University of Southampton is an excellent educational institution to opt for. Fantastic infrastructure, a beautiful campus, and a great environment for group as well as solo studies as well. On-campus accommodation is okay and the food options available are full of variety for Indian students and students of other nationalities as well.

A. Being a Russell Group university, the University of Southampton ranks fairly high and usually requires good grades for admission into most of the courses. So, if you’re an above-average student your chances of getting selected are high as the acceptance rate of the institute stands at 77.7% to 84%. Students must note that if a university has a high acceptance rate, it means that the admission criteria is relaxed. If your scores are good and meet the set requirements, you can easily secure an admission. However, students must not show any laxity when it comes to the admission process and documents.

A. On the QS World University Rankings 2023, the University of Southampton is placed at 78th position. Whereas, on the QS World University Rankings 2021, it was placed at 90th position. In order to be eligible for admission into various courses at the University of Southampton, students need to prove that they hold the required level of English language proficiency if they belong to a country where English is not the native language. Indian students who possess 70% in English in Class 12 (CBSE or CISCE) may be exempted from the extra English language requirements. Otherwise, the accepted UKVI secure test scores are that of: IELTS, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, Duolingo English Test, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English: Proficiency and Advanced.

Q. Can a student with 70% marks in Class 12th (CBSE/CISCE) get admission into the undergraduate courses at the University of Southampton?

A. No. You need to have a higher secondary certificate with atleast 75% marks on Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) and Metro State Boards (Delhi, Maharashtra, Chennai, Kolkata and Karnataka). Students also need high grades in UK A levels. In addition, students will require between 28 and 38 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB). Admission criteria for postgraduate courses differs from that of the undergraduate courses. For postgraduate courses, students need to score at least 60% in their graduation.

Q. What score is required for admission into a post-graduate course at the University of Southampton?

A. If you’re an Indian student you need to possess a graduation degree or equivalent, from a recognised university, with atleast 60% marks. Students must note that it should be UK 1st degree equivalent (55 - 70% depending on institution) or UK 2:1 degree equivalent (55-65% depending on instituion). In addition to this, you will need to provide a proof of your English-language proficiency

Q. What are the study options for exchange students at the University of Southampton?

A. Overseas exchange students are invited to study either for 1 year or for a semester. You can either join as an exchange student or can avail the study abroad at Southampton scheme. If you’re an exchange student, coming from partner universities, no tuition fee will be charged. But, if you are an Study Abroad student from a non-partner university, you will be required at pay tuition fee that will attract a 5% discount. Moreover, overseas exchange students can also study for a short period at the University of Southampton's International Summer School.

Q. Is there any English improvement course available for students who are weak in the English language?

A. Yes, the University of Southampton offers two options for improving and enhancing your English. One may either join Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course, which is held during the summers before the academic year begins or else may opt for the English for Academic Study course (which goes on for 3 semesters). Apart from these, a support program is also available which you can choose and study while completing your degree.

Q. How can you apply as an exchange student at the University of Southampton?

A. In order to apply as an exchange student, you will need to discuss the same with your tutor and your university’s exchange coordinator. Only after they nominate you for the same can you be invited for the exchange program. Exchange students will be provided with the same study options and modules from the undergraduate and postgraduate (both taught and research) courses.

Q. What are the qualifications required for a PhD admission at the University of Southampton?

A. A prospective PhD student needs to be holding good scores in their graduation and post-graduation degrees. They will also be required to present a strong and valid research proposal. Moreover, students who wish to pursue PhD and belong to non-English speaking country will need to provide a proof of their English proficiency through IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, etc.
