Courses Offered

What all courses are available to international students?

AU offers flexible course options for international students and lets them choose their major and minor subjects. Students can choose whether to double major, or create an interdisciplinary major. Owing to its curriculum adaptability, students can major in one AU school and minor in the other. Furthermore, over 40 majors provide the opportunity of pursuing a combined 5-year bachelor's/master’s program. Overall, it offers 80 bachelor's, 98 master's, and 11 doctoral degree programs. The university provides flexible study options at the graduate level, where students can choose from over 100 PG programs, including graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, master's, and PhD degrees. Graduate aspirants also have the option of taking up research at the masters and doctoral levels. Students can choose to pursue research either in the form of a project or as a thesis.


Pathways option is also available for international students with a non-English background, such as:

Eligibility & Documents Required

What are the eligibility requirements?

International students need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria for admission in American University:

Note: American University accepts a maximum of 30 credit hours from one or a combination of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate, CLEP subject examinations, or other AU-approved test credit. All exams for test credit must be completed prior to AU matriculation.


English Proficiency Scores for International Students

International candidates who do not belong to an English-speaking nation must display English language proficiency. The minimum score requirements are as follows:

What all documents are needed for application?

For admission to American University, international applicants must provide the following documents as per their chosen program or course. All records should be submitted in their original language and accompanied by notarized English translations if applicable.

Application & Tuition Fees

Is there any application fees?

There is an application fee of USD 75 for admission to an undergraduate course at American University. For applying to a graduate course at the American University, there is an application fee of USD 55. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid upfront for the application to be considered for admission.

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

The fee structure of the each of the programs differ as per course/subject or additional credit hours undertaken by a student. International graduate and non-degree students are charged tuition on a per credit basis. For the 2020-21 academic year, tuition was USD 1,812 per credit. Ideally, a two-year master's program ranges from 36-42 credits, thus, the tuition was between USD 65,232 and USD 76,104 for the whole program. Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

The American University offers a variety of scholarships to full-time international students. These scholarships are awarded based on merit, academic excellence, and the achievements of applicants.


International students who wish to avail the scholarships provided by American University should apply for the Fall (August) semester instead of the Spring semester. The applicants must select the checkbox for scholarship aid in the application form. The scholarship award is communicated to the applicants along with their acceptance letter.


Merit Awards for International First-Year Students

These are partial scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants who prove their expertise in academics, English proficiency, personal qualities, and community service. All the applicants who academically qualify for the university's scholarships are automatically considered eligible for part-time scholarships.


Graduate Students Merit Awards

International applicants of masters and doctoral study programs may be offered a partial scholarship according to merit and language proficiency. These are partial scholarships available to only a handful of students.


International Scholarships

Some scholarships are exclusively available for international students. These may be offered by the government of their country, or by the university administration.


Fellowship and Stipend

Research-based masters and doctoral courses offer applicants fellowship opportunities in return for their research service to the respective department. Some applicants may also apply for a stipend in exchange for teaching or research service.

When do the admissions start?

The university carries out the admission process twice a year for the Fall (August) and the Spring (January) intakes.

How to apply to UG courses?

To begin the application process, undergraduate international students must apply through the Coalition Application portal or the Common Application portal. Applicants need to fill the respective form on the chosen portal and pay the fee as per the chosen program. Do note that only one of the portals should be used to submit application.

How to apply to PG courses?

For graduate programs, international applicants must apply directly to the university through its online portal. Each graduate school has a separate portal for application. Visit the corresponding college website of your preferred area of study and apply to that specific course.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?

American University announces the admission decisions in 45 to 60 days after the submission of the application. The eligible students are notified about their scholarships (if availed) with the offer letter that is sent via email. As a prerequisite to complete the offer, international students must complete a pre-visa assessment.

The university considers applications on an individual basis and is subject to competition. American University admissions is selective with an acceptance rate of 36 percent (Fall 2019). AU believes in a holistic admissions process and that every applicant is more than the sum of their grades and test scores. How many Indian/international students are studying at the university?

As of 2019, the American University’s student body consisted of 14,318 students, including 8,527 UG and 5,791 PG students. Out of the total student body, 39 percent are male and 61 percent are female students. In 2019, it accepted 1,837 international students from over 120 countries, including around 350 Indian students.

Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

International students can undertake part-time jobs on and off the campus in line with their visas restrictions. Usually, students with an F-1 or J-1 visa can work up to 20 hours a week during the term and full-time during vacations. This restriction is only for a full-time job and does not extend to any voluntary work. However, such students are not eligible for the Federal Work Study (FWS) program. Students who pursue a masters or doctoral course from American University may opt for research-based assistantship opportunities. This assistantship might include teaching or research work in exchange for a stipend provided by the university.


For off-campus employment are only granted as per the following:

  • International organisation: Students with F-1 status, who have an offer of employment from a recognised international organisation on the verified US Department of State list, may qualify for employment approval.
  • Severe economic hardship: The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can extend employment permits for F-1 candidates who demonstrate a strong requirement for financial support in some situations.

Is on-campus housing available?

American University provides on-campus accommodation facilities to international students. The university guarantees on-campus housing to all incoming first-year undergraduate students.

Meals Plan

Students purchase a Meal Plan, which usually consists of Meal Swipes and Eaglebucks.Meal Plan requirements are based on the Housing License Terms and Conditions as agreed upon by Housing & Residence Life. First and second-year students residing in campus housing are required to be on a meal plan, based on credits earned at AU. First-year students living on campus are required to have at least a 175-Block meal plan. Second-year students living on campus are required to have at least a 100-Block meal plan. Apartment Residential students (McDowell, Nebraska, Frequency Apartments) are not required to hold a meal plan.

Students can opt for off-campus accommodation in the nearby campus area for ease of access and better room rates. The neighbourhood offers great arrangements for student accommodation in the form of flats, studio apartments, and shared rooms. The tentative accommodation cost for off-campus housing includes:
