Established in 1900, the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is a privately-owned university for health and medical sciences. It was founded in the city of Dallas by a small group of physicians to improve medical practice in North Texas. Initially known as the University of Dallas Medical Department, the institute commenced teaching in Roy and Lillie Cullen Building with 81 students. The institute's alliance with the Baylor University in 1903 resulted in its name change, giving it, it's present name.
One of the top colleges for medicine, Baylor College of Medicine has been ranked No. 22 in Best Medical Schools: Research and No. 4 in Best Medical Schools: Primary Care for 2020 by U.S. News & World Report.
Today, it is among the best and least expensive private medical institutions for research and learning in the country. Currently, the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) prepares more than 3,000 graduates, medical students, nurse anesthesia, and physician assistant students, as well as residents and post-doctoral fellows. The institute awards masters and doctorate degrees to students under the accreditation of SACSCOC.

The campus of the university comprises college buildings, laboratories, practice centers, and research facilities and houses the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Baylor College of Medicine, School of Allied Health Sciences, and National School of Tropical Medicine.
Other core facilities of the university campus include microscopy, protein and DNA sequencing, microarray, and comprehensive transgenic mouse facilities. BCM is associated with renowned hospitals, universities, and organizations such as UTMDACC, TIRR Memorial Hermann, Texas Children's Hospital, Menninger Clinic, and NASA.
The institute concentrates on educating the students to become leading health professionals and perform successful operations, provide quality treatment and patient care. It offers a plethora of programs in different disciplines of medicine, public health, and life sciences. The main areas of study in the university are biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, nurse anesthesia, physician assistant, and medical scientist training programs.
The Baylor College of Medicine has many distinguished alumni who are pioneers in their fields and have won awards for their contribution to the medical field. Michael J. Reardon, a globally known-heart surgeon who developed the first successful cardiac autotransplantation for cardiac sarcoma, is an alumnus of the university. Other noble alumni of the university are David Poplack (director of Texas Children's Cancer Center), Huda Zoghbi (an award-winning neuropsychiatrist), Denton Cooley (a cardiovascular surgeon popular for first successful artificial heart implantation), Richard A. Gibbs (an Australian geneticist) and C. Thomas Caskey (an American biomedical entrepreneur and geneticist).
