Established in the year 1863, Boston College (abbreviated as BC) is a privately-owned research university in Massachusetts, United States. Originally founded as an undergraduate college for liberal arts by Jesuits, the Society of Jesus, the institution started operating officially on 5th September 1864 in a small building situated on Harrison Avenue in South end of Boston. The institution holds accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education and New England Association of Schools and Colleges. It is affiliated to the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
BC has its main campus in the picturesque neighbourhood of Chestnut Hill and two satellite campuses in Brighton and Newton. Each of the campuses features a range of facilities and services to ensure an excellent study and stay experience for the students. The 175-acre Chestnut Hill Campus has the oldest buildings of the university that house most of the academic facilities, dining points, student residences and numerous athletic fields. The 65-acre Brighton Campus has the McMullen Museum of Art, theology and ministry school, administrative offices and newly-built athletic spaces.
Newton Campus is a 40-acre land site comprising the law school, sports facilities and several residence halls for freshmen. At present, the total student enrolment at Boston College is 14,600, out of which 53% are female students and 47% males. International students make up to 8% of the student body. It has 860 full-time faculty members on the roll, with 93% of them having doctoral degrees. The student-to-teacher ratio at BC is 11:1. Additionally, it has 273 student organisations, 40 intramural clubs and 31 women's and men's NCAA Division I sports teams.
