Established in 1910, Bowling Green State University is an open research university in Ohio. It is higher education, the state-supported institution that comprises nationally recognized research facilities. It offers study programs in the fields of arts, science, natural science, business, health, applied technologies, and humanities. Initially, the university began its first classes in 1914 with 304 students and 21 faculty members. It awarded its first bachelor's degrees in 1917.
The main campus of the university covers about 1,338 acres of land. It is a residential campus and features 116 buildings. This campus accommodates over 1200 students at its Kreischer Hall. Following the increase in the number of enrolments, the university developed another residence hall across Offenhauer Towers in 2011. Over the years, the number of enrolments grew to over 800 students. Later on, in 1929, the university started offering four-year degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Education. In 1935, the university introduced the College of Business and received the status of a university. The institution awarded its first doctoral degree in English in 1963. The old campus of the university comprises the administrative office and digital classrooms. It features a theatre and Founder's Hall.

The new Bowen-Thompson Student Union, reopened in early 2002, provides space for the offices of student life and campus involvement as well as approximately 40 student organizations. The academic structure of the university has 21 departments and 4 schools. At the university, students are guided under well-experienced faculty members. They are also taken to the research centers for enhancing practical knowledge. In addition, it features a music library and digital gallery.
The University offers 14 associate degree programs, more than 200 undergraduate majors and programs, 13 master's degree programs in 120 fields, two specialist degree programs, and 14 doctoral programs. Presently it has more than 20,400 students including 18,700 on the main campus and 1,700 at BGSU Firelands, who are enrolled at the university and various off-campus centers. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 18:1.
The university maintains a list of some notable alumni that includes Lexi Allen (singer, Actress), Ray Davis (Musician), James Carlos Blake (Author), Frank Dungan (Television producer & writer), Jason Jackson (ESPN sportscaster), Steve Hartman (CBS News Correspondent), Kathy Sheehan (Mayor of Albany, New York), Bob Reynolds (Former professional football player), Barbara Paul (Renowned author), Tim Conway (Emmy Award-winning actor), Thomas Cochran (Former Mayor of Norwalk, Ohio) and Dave Wottle (Olympic Gold Medalist).
