Brigham Young University is located in Utah, United States. Also known as the BYU or The Y, it is a university for private research and owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The parent organization is the Church educational System (CES). The primary emphasis is on undergraduate education in 179 majors. The university has 62 masters and 26 doctoral degree programs. There are two satellite campuses - one in Salt Lake City and one in Jerusalem. It was established on October 16, 1875 (144 years ago). There are 1,264 full-time and 486 part-time academic staff.
The curriculum of the university includes required courses in the Bible (KJV), LDS scripture, history, and doctrine. There are also university-sponsored weekly devotional assemblies where most speakers address religious topics. The cost is largely subsidized by the Church's tithing funds. BYU's athletic teams known as the Cougars have altogether won a total of ten NCAA national championships and thus were named National Champions in football by multiple publications in 1984.
There are scientists associated with the university who have created noteworthy inventions like electronic television by Philo T. Farnsworth. He had begun his college in BYU and had returned to do fusion research. Harvey Fletcher, who is also part of the alumni, was the inventor of the stereophonic sound and went on to carry out the famous oil-drop experiment with Robert Millikan and became the Founding Dean of the BYU College of Engineering. Notable alumni include Stephanie Meyer who is the author of the Twilight series and Kevin Rollins who is the former CEO of Dell.
