Los Angeles State College was renamed California State University, Los Angeles in 1947 according to a law passed by the California legislature. The university, often known as Cal State LA, began operations on the grounds of L.A. City College. In September 1949, the institution was renamed Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts & Sciences, and in January 1964, it was renamed California State College at Los Angeles. In 1972, the college was granted university status and got its current name. Currently, the university is Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredited (WASC). Additionally, it is connected to the network of California State Universities.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2023, it is placed #1201–1400. It is ranked #8 in US News and World Report's list of the top public schools for 2022.

The university's campus, which is in Los Angeles, has a top-notch infrastructure and provides a variety of amenities for the students. Eight colleges make up the institution, and together they offer 57 undergraduate majors, 51 master's degree programmes, and four PhD degrees in subjects including accounting, business, science, engineering, communication, nursing, philosophy, economics, and computer science. Business administration, sociology, criminal justice, child development, psychology, and other popular undergraduate courses at CSU, Los Angeles have some of the highest enrollment rates. Counseling, MBA, Social Work, Nursing, etc. are a few prominent graduate programmes that have witnessed a rise in enrollment throughout the admissions process.

There are 26,000 students enrolled there, including more than 1800 international ones, and 1,700 highly skilled teaching members. International students must meet the minimal qualifying requirements established by the institution, including the minimum grade point average (GPA) attained, results on the English language exam, and course preparation. There are more than 130 clubs and organisations available to students. The university's Career Development Center assists students in every step of their journey, from picking a curriculum to filling out job applications.
