Central Connecticut State University is the largest university within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. Founded in 1849 as the New Britain Normal School, It is also the state's oldest publicly funded university. It transitioned into a university in 1983 under its current name. The University welcomed its 13th president, Dr. Zulma R. Toro, in January of 2017. She is the university’s first female president and its first Hispanic chief executive.
The university boasts of its beautiful campus spread across 165 acres of land. The campus consists of state-of-the-art academic buildings, administrative offices, abundant green spaces, accessible walkways, sports facilities, recreational spaces, and residence halls. Elihu Burritt Library holds an extensive collection of books total more than 750,000 volumes, periodicals total over 3,000, and microform and other non-print materials total an additional 550,000 items. CCSU has nine residence halls on the campus accomodating 23 percent of students. The students stay in spacious rooms that have access to high-speed free Wi-Fi, television with satellite channels, study lounges, and game rooms. The campus also features a book store, wellness center, gym, pool, fitness studio, student center, athletic fields, and several eating points.

Through its exchange programs, the university facilitates the students to engage in different communities and gain international exposure. It provides numerous internships and training opportunities for students to learn about real-world tasks under professionals. Besides, it has more than 125 clubs and organizations that are managed by the Students' Association. These clubs provide a sense of community and leadership opportunities by organizing several events, programs, and competitions.
The university is a diverse community with students and employees from over 40 countries. At present, the university has about 10,262 students enrolled for distinct programs, out of which 51% are females and 49% are males. The university staff comprises 435 full-time affiliates and 504 part-time faculties. With an average class size of 25 learners, the student-teacher ratio at CCSU is 14:1.
The university has an extensive list of its alumni who are renowned for immense contribution in their fields. Erin Joyce Brady (Miss USA 2013), Maria L. Sanford (Educator), Kenny Johnson (Actor), Michael Francis Sherman (Former Giridoron Footballer, Current Head Coach), Justise Hairston (American Footballer), Robert Michael Gates (Politician and Intelligence Analyst), John Barry Larson (American Politician and Entrepreneur), Shimon Peres (Former Prime Minister and ninth President of Israel), Dan Rather (American Journalist) and Robert Upshur Woodward (Investigative Journalist) are the few notable alumni of CCSU.
