Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?
Yes, the university offers various scholarships to its qualifying international students.
Undergraduate Scholarships
Undergraduate applicants can apply for merit-based scholarships offered on the basis of GPA and application materials. Up to 100% of the tuition fees can be covered by these scholarships.
Freshman applicants with a GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 US scale may receive the NSP (National Scholarship Program).
It comes with an award of USD 17,181, which is the difference between the tuition fees of domestic and international students. The award can be renewed for up to 4 years.
Graduate Scholarships
Graduate applicants with a GPA (undergraduate) of 3.6 and those who do not have a master’s degree might receive the NSP scholarship.
For this, no separate application is required, as application forms submitted during admission are reviewed to select deserving students.
Graduates who do not qualify for the NSP and have a GPA of 3.2 or higher can get the SUCG (Student Success Program) scholarships. It offers an award of USD 3,100 annually for two years.

When do the admissions start?
Eastern Michigan University accepts international applications in three intakes:
International students may apply in either of the aforementioned intakes. Undergraduates are, however, recommended to apply in either Fall or Spring Intake. The Summer Intake offers limited options for degree programs and allows less time for visa preparation. Also, Summer Intake is more suitable for transfer and graduate applicants.

Pathway
International students who do not meet the English requirements can opt for ESL (English as Second Language) program. Graduates who do not meet the Pathway program requirements and undergraduates who want to be prepared for professional life can choose IEP (Intensive English Program) to enhance their English proficiency. After completing either program, students can proceed to the regular course of studies.
What are the steps to an undergraduate application?
International undergraduates need to follow these steps to apply to EMU's bachelor’s programs:
Step 1: Undergraduate applicants can start by visiting app.emich.edu/ug/login. New visitors need to create an account, while those already registered can continue by logging in to the portal.
Step 2: After logging in to the portal, students need to click on the ‘Create a New Application’ button.
Step 3: After opening the application form, students will need to fill in details like ‘Application Type’, ‘Term’, and ‘Major’ first. They may then fill in their biographic information and contact details.
Step 4: Finally, after filling in their grades, address, and other information, students can click on the ‘Submit’ button. If they are unable to complete the application in one sitting, they can choose the ‘Save and Close’ option.

Step 2: Once students log in, they may read the application requirements and click on ‘Begin a New Application’.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?
Eastern Michigan University reviews international applications, a process divided into several stages. Usually, an application is reviewed, and the admission decision is shared with an applicant within 10 to 30 working days (2-6 weeks) after receiving the application form and materials. Part Time Work While Studying
Can I work while studying here?
International students with F-1 and J-1 visas can apply for part-time on-campus jobs. Students can work up to 20 hours per week during the winter and fall terms, while they can work up to 29 hours per week during the summer term. The following conditions should be met for on-campus jobs:
- Students must have good academic grades and be enrolled in a full-time program.
- Students must not be approaching the end of their programs.
- Students with a J-1 visa can seek permission to work on-campus from OISS and the concerned officer.
- Students with an F-1 visa can seek work authorization from OISS.

Graduate Assistantships
To work as a Graduate Assistant or GA, students must have either an F-1 or J-1 visa. The following things need to be confirmed to get the GA position:
- Students who secured admission with conditions 4 and 5 due to low GPA are not eligible for the position of GA.
- Students who have taken teacher certification, non-degree programs, or continuing education cannot apply for graduate assistantships.
To continue working in the position of a GA, students must meet the following criteria:
- A GPA (cumulative) of at least 3.0 or higher needs to be maintained throughout the service.
- Fall and winter appointees need to maintain at least 6 graduate credit hours, while summer appointees must get 1 graduate credit.
- Students must show progress in the direction of finishing their program of study.
- Students should register without excess course withdrawals or incompletes.
Though the compensation is determined by the office that hires the graduates, students get the benefits listed below in the role of a GA:
- Library privileges
- The differential of the tuition fees gets covered.
- A waiver of up to 9 credit hours every semester and up to 18 credit hours for the entire academic year is applicable to graduate assistants.
- A close association with other students and faculty members
- Work experience of an academic nature

Yes, on-campus housing is available and mandatory for international students coming to study at Eastern Michigan University. Only incoming freshmen who live with their parents within a radius of 50 miles are allowed to stay off-campus. All remaining incoming freshmen must live on-campus.
