Established in 1925, Gannon University is a four-year private Catholic university. Started as a college of arts and sciences, under the 1925 charter of Villa Maria College, it was established by John Mark Gannon. In 1944, it received its own charter as a men's college of 4 years. Later in 1964, after becoming a co-educational institute, it established a graduate school. Finally, in the year 1979, the college was granted University status to offer higher learning.

The institute is set at a close distance from business centres, associations, and government organizations that are active associates in helping students to directly understand the industry and workspaces. Other than this, the university maintains more than 140 clubs and organizations to allow students to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities. Also, it offers 22 varsity sports and is associated with NCAA Division II.
Further, the university has a network of more than 46,000 alumni who are actively contributing to different areas of society. Daniel Cudmore (Canadian actor and stuntman), Zaid Al-Khas, (skilled foreign basketball player), Kevin Benson (Meteorologist for WPXI), Ryan Bizzarro (Member of the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania) and John Brabender (Republican Political consultant) are some of the notable alumni of the university.
