George Mason University is a public research institution which was initially founded in 1949 as a branch of the Virginia University. In the year 1972, it became an independent institution with its main campus being located in Fairfax, Virginia. The university was named after its founding father, George Mason, who drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights which proved helpful for the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights. Around 500 student groups along with 41 fraternities and sororities are recognized by the university.
George Mason University operates three campuses in Virginia and a fourth campus in Songdo in South Korea.
