George Mason University is a public research institution which was initially founded in 1949 as a branch of the Virginia University. In the year 1972, it became an independent institution with its main campus being located in Fairfax, Virginia. The university was named after its founding father, George Mason, who drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights which proved helpful for the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights.
