Established as the ‘Georgia School of Technology’ in 1885, Georgia Tech’s creation signaled the beginning of the agrarian South's transformation to an industrial economy. Initially, it focused on trade and training programs and apprenticeships. With time, it expanded its focus to advanced technological and scientific research and thus, was renamed the Georgia Institute of Technology (1948). Georgia Tech identifies as a public research university, an institute of technology and is a part of the University System of Georgia. It aims at preparing students to use their innovative skills and strong work ethic to solve real-world problems and improve the lives of people around the globe. As a research-intensive university, it confers over USD 1 billion annually as research awards across all six colleges and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1, and over 40 percent of its classes have fewer than 20 students.
