Established in 1908, Georgian Court University is a private university initially founded by the Sisters of Mercy, who also provided funding. Initially, the Sisters of Mercy ran the Mount Saint Mary College in North Plainfield, shifting to the current campus in 1924, and renaming it as George Court College. In 2004, Georgian Court University came into being as the college was granted university status. The university was a women's college with selected co-educational programs until 2013 when it became fully co-educational. The Middle States Commission accredits Georgian Court University for higher education as well as the New Jersey Commission for higher education.

Georgian Court is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA II. Georgian Court University sprawls over the magnificent and historical Lakewood campus in New Jersey, formerly owned by financier George Jay Gould, who hired architect Bruce Price to develop a beautiful estate with many gardens: a classical Italian Garden, a Japanese Garden, and a Formal Garden. The campus is conveniently located 60 miles from Philadelphia and New York. The university is near the beautiful Lake Carasaljo and is only 10 miles from Jersey Shore. The campus is also famous as a National Historic Landmark and a National Arboretum Site. The casino building is a notable landmark, with a tennis court, ballroom, and bowling alley available. The McAuley Heritage Center, located near the Formal Gardens, holds regular educational, cultural, and entertainment programs for the benefit of students.

This beautiful place bordering Lake Carasaljo contains the Audrey British George Science Center, the Farley Center, which includes the Psychology and School of Business & Digital Media, the Raymond Hall Complex with the School of Education, and many other beautiful buildings. It also boasts several recreational facilities, including the Casino, the Maria Hall, or College Residence Hall for social recreation, the Court Café with the Gavan Student Lounge, and so on.

Women in Leadership Development Program encourages other women to develop into leaders, and the Emerging Leaders Program provides leadership training for undergraduate men and women. Georgian Court University offers over 30 undergraduate and ten graduate academic study programs, as well as several certificate programs for professionals. Overall, the university has three Schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, and School of Business & Digital Media. The courses offered range from Psychology to Biochemistry, to Digital Communication. The university also has over 60 clubs and other student organizations. With their Global Transformative Initiative, the university offers Study Abroad options and a global perspective to students.

Georgian Court University boasts of having some very distinguished alumni. Marlene Lynch Ford has served as Ocean County Prosecutor, Assignment Judge (Chief Judge) of Ocean County, and as part of the State Assembly of New Jersey. Mary Joyce Doyle is best known for her contribution to developing the Bergen County Cooperative Library System, by beginning the system of reciprocal book lending amongst Bergen County libraries. Another notable alumni is Janet Noble, a playwright, and journalist.
