Kent State University is a publicly funded research-oriented university situated in Kent, Ohio, United States. The university began in the year 1910 as a college to train teachers. Kents State University is the third-largest university in Ohio, and the Kent campus is spread over an area of more than 950 acres. What are the eligibility requirements?

For applying to Kent State University, international applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria according to the course preferred.

For UG 1st year International students:

  • Students should have finished secondary school in their home countries when the enrollment time comes
  • Those who wish to pursue a first-year UG course should hold a GPA of 2.5 on a U.S. 4.0 scale. In case one does not meet the minimum requirements may get considered for the pre-major. 
  • English language proficiency

Note: Overseas students who hold excellent intellectual and creative abilities are motivated to apply to the Honors College. These students attend special classes taught by expert faculty.

For Graduate Courses:

  • Completion of undergraduate courses with a similar area of study as the graduate course
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0
  • English language proficiency

For Transfer Students:

  • Applicants should have attended an institution of higher studies after graduation from secondary school or high school. They cannot apply as a new 1st year-transfer student in case they've been earlier enrolled in a post-secondary (higher education) institution.
  • Should be holding a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a U.S. 4.0 scale. Also, those applying for 1st year or transfer admission do not need to submit standardized test scores (ACT or SAT).

Kent State University: Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

Kent State University offers various scholarships to all full-time international students. These payments are awarded based on merit, academic excellence, and the achievements of applicants.

The Global Scholarship - Is a scholarship program offered by Kent University to all incoming international students. This scholarship provides an annual aid of $4,000 to undergraduate international students. There is no separate application for this scholarship, and it is automatically provided to all eligible applicants along with admission.

Freshman Scholarship - Is offered to meritorious international applicants who enter the university with a non-immigrant visa. International applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.6 on a 4.0 scale are considered for this scholarship by Kent State University.

Graduate Assistance - Is a fellowship-based scholarship by Kent State University. The administrative fellowship offers tuition fee waivers in return for an assistantship, while some doctoral programs also include a monthly stipend. A teaching fellowship provides a full tuition fee waiver in return for teaching or research work.

Conditional Admission and ESL

Kent State University provides a pathway option to international students who require additional aid to fulfill minimum eligibility criteria in academics or English proficiency. Such applicants are provided conditional admission which means that they need to complete additional coursework before starting the main program of their choice. The goal of conditional admission is to give students a chance to make up for any inadequacies and illustrate their skills to undertake university-level study comprehensively.

ESL or the English as a Second Language course is a conditional admission program for international students who lack the required English proficiency to undertake their course study. International students can undertake part-time jobs on and off campus in line with their visa restrictions. Usually, international students coming to the US on an F1 Visa or a J1 Visa can work up to 20 hours per week during the term and up to 28 hours per week during vacations.
